1913 Kangaroo Long Envelope 4d orange ACSC RE2, commercial usage to Ohio uprated with KGV 2d orange tied by Sydney cds of JA 21 13, red/white R label, American transit & arrival b/s & unusual 'intaglio' 'REGISTERED' h/s in purple, unusually fine with none of the wrinkling characteristic of this issue, undercatalogued at $400. Only 30,000 were issued. [Mark Diserio's example, also used in 1921, sold for $840]
The long Registration Envelopes were very unpopular and seem to have been withdrawn, probably before World War I. It appears they were re-released, probably as an economy measure, c.1921.

1920 KGV Sideface New Value 5d brown essay with pre-1919 Heading & the Distance from the First 'R' of 'REGISTERED' to the Right of the Stamp = 113mm ACSC RE10(E)1 endorsed "Specimen/G 1856" in manuscript, three closed spike-holes at U/L, Cat $2000. On the issued envelopes, the heading was moved 4mm to the right so that the red vertical line fell between 'REGISTERED' & 'LETTER'. [The ACSC states that examples were sent to the State Postmasters-General but this is believed to be the only surviving example: illustrated in the ACSC at page 316. 1923 KGV 'FOURPENCE/HALFPENNY' on 5d brown with Curved Flap & Address Lines at L/L as RE16, the flap misfolded resulting in the Stamp being Printed at an Angle, unused. This is a technically interesting item. It proves that the surcharge, which is on the same angle as the stamp, was applied to unfolded unissued stock.
1930 KGV 'FIVE/PENCE' on Sideface 4½d violet with Text in Red ACSC RE 23, unused, Cat $1500. [The ACSC states "This is a rare envelope of which only a small quantity were revalued [sic; they mean "issued"], presumably returns from post offices. Mark Diserio's superb example - also with the Surcharge Misplaced to the Base - sold for $1680]

1912 Melbourne Printing KEVII 3d red on off-white stock with the Flap Folded to the Back plus Reset Text & Smaller-Boxed 'REGISTERED', CTO with 'MELBOURNE/DE9/13' cds. Unrecorded by Higgins & Gage. Only four CTO examples are known, all from the Australia Post Archives Sale No 1 (1987). In addition, only a couple of unused examples and two used examples are recorded. Mark Diserio's CTO example sold at our auction of 3.10.2017 for $1152.
On 19.12.1912, only 13 days before the first of the Kangaroo & Map stamps were issued, JB Cooke, the Victorian Government Stamp Printer, released a mere 3900 of these envelopes, of which some 3100 were destroyed before February 1914. It is likely that examples were CTO'd in anticipation of the looming destruction order. [NB: this envelope is a 'mule': the lines on the reverse are in reddish brown, not the red of the text & the lines on the face]

1881 Naish Design 4d die proof in lilac/yellow card reduced to stamp-size, plus similar die proofs for the 2d in mauve/pink, 3d in mauve/pink & 8d in lilac/yellow (corner crease at U/R) all affixed to a single piece of card (71x133mm) endorsed below "Designed & Engraved on/steel punches by/Charles Naish/12 College Parade/Kew/ Melbourne" providing a rare example of this highly skilled craftsman's signature, minor blemishes are of no importance. Ex JRW Purves, Rodney Perry and 'Edgar': sold at Gary Watson's auction of 5.3.1990 for $1550.
An exceptional frontispiece for any collection of Victorian Postal Stationery: in addition to the 4d, the 2d was used for Envelopes & the 3d was used for the 1889 red/green 'Via Italy' Postal Card.

We believe that this was either an essay or, more likely, was considered an unsatisfactory colour & was therefore not issued]
1891 Rate Reduction 3d carmine size b Stieg #C7c to Russia "per P&O RMS Ballaarat" in 1893 with 2½d red/yellow pair tied by bold 'R' handstamps with 'REGISTERED/MELBOURNE VIC' cds below, Italian TPO b/s & very fine Cyrillic arrival b/s of St Petersburg, minor spotting. Per 'Ballaarat' ex Melbourne 24.5.1893; arrived Brindisi 25.6.1893. [The addressee Grand Duke Alexei Mikhailovich was only 17 at the time. He died of tuberculosis in 1895]
1891 Rate Reduction 3d carmine size b with Red Line through the Embossed Stamp Stieg #C7e, unused. [NB: the Line through Stamp varieties are very scarce and underrated]
1893 3d carmine size b with Red Line through the Embossed Stamp Stieg #C8i to France in 1901 with 2½d blue tied by 'R'-in-circle h/s & 'BOURKE ST EAST' cds alongside, Paris transit & 'ARRIVEE/NICE' arrival b/s. [The Line through Stamp varieties were recognised by collectors who retained numerous unused examples. Commercially used examples are rare]
1905 Distinctive Sans Serif Text 3d deep rose Steig #C10, very minor tonespots mostly on the reverse, unused, Stieg Cat US$500 (2001). This is a rare envelope, of which only two used examples have been recorded (also Cat US$500).
1907 Reversion to Seriffed Text 3d pink with tiny 'M41240...PM' Imprint vertically at left of 'REGISTERED' box Stieg #C11, Tatts usage with 4d tied by 'REGISTERED/12OC07/STOCK EXCHANGE' cds being the ERD for this issue, small filled spikehole. Rare: Carl Stieg states "Only two copies recorded", which is quite bizarre because he prices both of the two recorded variants unused & used, which suggests a minimum of 4 examples. Whatever the case, we think this is the first example we have seen.
1911 Reset Text & Small 'REGISTERED'-in-Box 3d rose-pink Steig #C13, minor blemishes, Steig Cat US$400 (2001). [This was the last Victorian issue. Even unused examples are very scarce]
1911 Reset Text & Small 'REGISTERED'-in-Box 3d rose-pink Steig #C13 social usage to London in August 1911 with 1d pink tied by 'PRAHRAN' cds, scarce red/white registration label, the flap damaged on opening but the facial appearance is very fine. [On 1.5.1911, the rate to Britain was reduced from 2d to 1d. This is the earliest of the very few used examples recorded: See also Lot 402]
