image QUEEN VICTORIA - REGISTERED "Found open and/resealed in R.L.B." COVER SENT TO HER MAJESTY EX SCOTLAND; 3 Jan. 1881 env. (opened out for display; with some wear and tears, understandably mended with paper and wax by P.O. in transit!) registered from "INVERKEITHING" (fine cds on the front) "A Sa Majeste La Reine Des Amiraute de L'Angleterre, Londres" with 1d Venetian Reds (3) tied by Numerals but also with Edinburgh & London regd. d.s. on the front. Exceptionally - unique for a letter to a British monarch? - also having a very fine rare red boxed London "Found open and/resealed in R[egistered]. L[etter]. B[ranch]." on the reverse. A very rare Registered Letter Branch marking and a rare letter registered to the Queen. Cross Reference: SCOTLAND, INSTRUCTIONAL MARKS, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, REGISTERED MAIL (Image)

image ROYAL YACHT COVERS - QV 'OSBORNE' & KEVII 'V&A' - EX PORTSMOUTH/NORWAY BOTH WITH CONTENTS; 19th Jan. 1901 & 31st Aug. 1907 envs. from the Commander (“[Lord] Kelburne]”) of the “ROYAL YACHT OSBORNE” at Portsmouth and from 2nd Lieut. Engineer (F.G. Haddy) of “H.M. YACHT VICTORIA & ALBERT” at “Christiania, Norway” respectively. Both were written on the Yachts’ special stationery; the first sent to Ireland with a QV 1d Lilac tied by the Portsmouth c.d.s., the other (neatly closed tears along top edge) sent by Royal Bag to London and posted there at the 1d rate to Portsmouth. The Commander is full of questions about a new posting, while engineer Haddy writes to his wife of the King & Queen of Norway and the sudden arrival of the Empress of Russia! Queen Victoria enjoyed having a special yacht laid on for her own use; Edward VII did the same, but in 1901 the aging “Osborne II” (launched 1874) was finally replaced by the “Victoria & Albert III” (launched 1901, broken up in 1955). Very few covers with letters actually written on board these Royal vessels have survived, those from the Q.V. period being particularly rare. (2 covers)Cross Reference: HAMPSHIRE, NORWAY (Image)
