AEROGRAMMES: Terrific basis for a new collection with scarcer issues including KGVI 7d on Yellow Paper with Ungummed Flaps for use in TPNG (superb unused), 1956 Olympics with 'MELBOURNF' Error (commercially used) & 10c with Large 'c' (VFU), several First Days of Issue, special flights including KGVI 7d with printed '.../RE-OPENING/AUSTRALIA-ENGLAND/EMPIRE AIR ROUTE/...' in purple signed by both pilots, excellent postal history content with upratings including three different 10d each re-rated 9c with 1c adhesive, 1948 from Phillips Ponds (SA) cancelled at 'WOOMERA WEST', 1952 to Austria with censor cachet within, unusual destinations including New Zealand, Singapore, Yugoslavia, Canada, Thailand & Nepal, commercial usages from the Solomons of three different Territories formular types, etc, a few problems but generally fine to superb.

AEROGRAMMES: 1947-84 collection in three heavy Vario albums with a few forerunners, good KGVI selection including 7d on yellow (unfolded) & 7d with Re-Opening of Empire Route Overprint in Red, 1956 Olympics x7 with different Olympics cds, etc, a few with 'SPECIMEN' Handstamp in violet & a few OHMS types, 1977 Christmas with 'TEST LETTER' Handstamp, private formular types including by Arthur Bergen x4, many with FDI or commemorative datestamps; also Letter Sheets including 5d with 'SPECIMEN' Overprint in Red x3; generally very fine. Weighs 10kg. Ex John Walker.
ENVELOPES - STAMPED TO ORDER: 1918-19 Uprating of Embossed Star 1d red Die 4 with ½d green added for the War Tax ACSC ES34 with printed Melbourne address for Vacuum Oil, light stain on the reverse & small nick at lower-left, Cat $400.
ENVELOPES: 1985 World Cup Athletics original artwork by Brian Clinton three preliminary designs for the stamp area of the PSE, three PSEs (two signed by the artist) and a large (1100x850mm) painting of the image used (in reverse) for the illustration on the PSE.
FOOD PARCEL LABELS: 1947 'DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE/VICTORIA' 5/10d dark blue with 'MO/76' printer's mark at L/L ACSC PL4B, to Northumberland with light parcel cancel, very late usage with '24NOV1947' dater in violet, careless hinge-thin at U/L corner, Cat $1500. Much scarcer than the similar Myer label, Cat $800: the relative scarcity must be at least 10:1.
LETTER CARDS: All-different bundle with KGVI 2d ACSC LC65 66A & 66B, then LC69-100 largely complete simplified, also 'SPECIMEN' Overprint in Red on KGVI 3½d (a couple of faults) and QEII 3½d 4d & 5d and KGVI 3d Postal Card, a few minor blemishes but generally very fine unused, Cat $1600+.
LETTERCARDS: 1924 'THREE/HALFPENCE' on KGV 2d red with Zoo, Adelaide, SA view ACSC LC54 (142c) but with Perforations Intruding Into View at Right and additionally with the Surcharge Slightly Misplaced to Left, used from "Caulfield, Jan 31-24" with 'MALVERN/VIC' cds, small repaired spike-hole on face, Cat $200 for normal. The ACSC does not list any mis-perforations for this issue, and the item does not qualify as a listed misplaced surcharge (requiring the whole of one letter to be outside the stamp impression); however, comparison with other cards shows that the alignment between the view and the stamp impression on this item is not standard, and that this has contributed to both 'varieties'. A technically-interesting piece.
WARTIME ISSUES: 1953 usage of 'AIR MEDAL SECTION' Wrapper with printed 'POSTAGE/PAID/4½D/ MELBOURNE' & 'DEFENCE' R 'label' in red, attached by 'sticky' tape to its original box (90x60x20mm), 'PROSPECT/27OC53/SA-AUST' arrival b/s, neatly slit on one side only. With the three apparently never-worn Service Medal, War Medal & Defence Medal all named to '39700 F.L. CORCORAN' on the rims, & the enclosed 'Notes for Guidance in the Wearing of...Medals on Civilian Clothes'. A remarkable survivor, being the only such 'complete package' we have seen. The illustration is above Lot 339.
ENVELOPES - OFFICIAL: 'OS' in the Dies Centennial 1d violet x3 & De La Rue 2d blue all with the stamp impression overprinted with six bars in black (3) or red, minor flap faults.

With the issued imperforate card on which the Lion is Facing Forwards, the reply-half is at the top, and "cut or" added to the footnote, which is 97mm long. Ex Ray Kelly, with a copy of his "discovery" piece in 'The Postal Stationery Collector' of May 2003. [We are not aware of any other examples]

POSTAL CARDS: 1911 Four-Line Heading HG 17 with 'ADDRESS' below 'F AUST', three examples hand-illustrated in India ink & signed "Saville H Sheard" comprising 1) a young girl with parasol; 2) a young woman with large ruffled colour; and 3) a glamorous older woman with absurdly large hat & ridiculously small parasol; toning/aging on the address-sides caused by the acidic paper of the album in which they were originally stored but the second of them is only a little affected. Believed to be the only recorded hand-illustrated examples of the so-called "artist card", as discussed in Hugh Campbell's 'Queensland Postal History' at pp269-270. Alan Griffiths is silent on this subject but does note that HG 17 was used for the famous Esperanto cards. [See also Lot 1316]
