image Skilfully executed elaborate design for a 2d design in India ink on a postcard-size piece of thin card, the numeral '2' in Chinese white, endorsed at L/L "Finis Coronat Opus" (the pseudonym of Maximilian Tannenberg, whose designs for the 2½d & 5d stamps were adopted). A superb essay. [While it might appear that this was an essay for a postcard, it is believed to have been submitted for a proposed envelope issue]

image WRAPPERS: 1896 Post Office Design Competition entry by "Kangaroo" of a ½d Coin design with very elaborate (& consequently unsuitable) header incorporating numerous design elements including a train & a spear-toting aborigine, expertly executed in reddish purple & Chinese white on thin card (315x246mm) with a number of marginal endorsements including "Prize divided" & an apparent voting sheet showing this as the most popular entry. Also "take out newspaper only", suggesting the design might have been considered for a Postal Card, for which it was clearly more suitable. A stunning exhibition item that was absent from the Walker/Eustis Collection.
