'RETURNED FOR/ADDITIONAL POSTAGE/SHORT PAID ...' cachet in violet on 1938 cover to USA with KGVI 2d red to which a QE 1d green has been added and then forwarded, also similar cachet in purple on 1947 Small Arms Factory, Lithgow NSW OHMS cover to USA with 2½d meter cancel apparently forwarded without any additional postage paid, plus 1950 Government Statistician, Brisbane window-face cover originally franked with 2½d Forrest only and 1d Princess added after a typed notice with similar wording was attached, the first with a couple of minor blemishes. Scarce trio.

1911 (Jan 30) double-rate commercial usage of NSW 3d Registration Envelope with superb 'CHAPMAN'S/Music &/Musical Instrument Stores/...' cachet on the reverse, to an accordion manufacturer in Germany with permitted combination franking of NSW ½d x2 & Queensland 2d x2 tied by 'HAYMARKET/NSW' cds, faint 'HAYMARKET' h/s on provisional R label, superb 'KLINGENTHAL/(SACHSEN)' arrival b/s, some stains on the reverse. A significant item. [From 13.10.1910, the stamps of the six States were interchangeable. Most such usages are of one State's stamps being used in another State. Combination frankings such as this are seen on philatelic mail but rarely on commercial items]
1913 (Feb 17) usage of Tasmania Envelope 2d green registered to Federated Malay States with Kangaroos 2d grey (corner fault L/L) tied by Sydney 'REGISTERED' cds and red/black 'R' label alongside, Penang '13 MR' transit and 'SERAMBANG/13 MR' arrival b/s, then re-directed with Malacca '17 MR' transit b/s and 'ASAHAN/18 MR' arrival on face, some aging marks & blemishes. Paid 4d for the 1d Empire letter rate plus 3d registration fee; carried by rail to Adelaide to meet the Orient Line mail steamer 'Orvieto' to Colombo. Ex Dr Tony Orchard. An unusual combination franking.
1913 (Apr 4) cover to the Canal Zone with combination franking of NSW ½d green & Kangaroos First Wmk 2d grey tied by 'ST PETERS/NSW' cds, 'EMPIRE CZ' arrival b/s, redirected to Michigan with a different 'EMPIRE' duplex on the face, the cover slightly reduced at left.

1913 (Aug 7) usage of Victoria 3d red Registration Envelope to England with 'LATE FEE' boxed cachet on face and added combination franking of Kangaroo 1d red and Victoria 3d orange tied REGISTERED/1-30P/STOCK EXCHANGE' cds with red R label (Burt type V4a; rated R; new ERD) paying triple 1d per ½oz Empire letter rate plus 3d registration fee and 1d late fee (at a single rate of letter postage), a few edge faults & aging marks but still presentable. There is some conjecture about the late fee charged: according to Breckon, the Stock Exchange (along with the Rialto & GPO) imposed a special late fee of 3d for items posted before 3pm, but that this fee was abolished in 1907 when the uniform 'single rate of letter postage' fee was introduced; perhaps the clerk at the Stock Exchange has imposed a 3d late fee on this item, but without knowing the weight of the contents we cannot determine this.
1913 (Sept 8) usage of Kangaroos 4d orange Registration Envelope (ACSC RE3) to Switzerland with added combination franking of Kangaroo 1d red plus NSW ½d green tied 'DUBBO/NSW' cds paying 2½d foreign letter rate plus 3d registration fee, blank perforated R label in orange (Burt N1b) endorsed "DUBBO" on face, Sydney transit and 'BERN/10 X 13' arrival b/s, couple of very minor edge bends.
1913 (Nov 12) 'Nauru (Marshall-Inseln)' postcard with view of Natives standing in lagoon in front of Huts, sent to Switzerland with combination franking of New South Wales ½d green and Kangaroo 1d red both with 'JS/S' commercial perfins of Justus Scharff, Wholesale Ironmongers tied Sydney continuous machine cancel paying 1½d foreign postcard rate, Swiss 'NYON' transit cds where re-directed to Germany, couple of very minor blemishes. Mostly likely the writer of the message (in German) obtained the postcard at Nauru (then part of the German Colony of the Marshall Islands) on his way out to Sydney and knew someone at Justus Scharff who supplied the stamps, possibly even having his mail addressed there; the message includes (translated) "on my way home, should be in Germany by early January".
1913 (Nov) Fruit Growers' Co-operative Association long cover sent to USA with combination franking of New South Wales 2½d blue and Kangaroo 5d chestnut (ACSC $1200 for non-solo use on cover) tied Sydney cds paying triple 2½d per ½oz foreign letter rate, re-directed on arrival with 'MARSHFIELD/DEC 8/OREGON' duplex cancel on face, couple of minor blemishes.
1913 (Nov 20) cover sent registered to Austria with combination franking of Victoria ½d green and Kangaroo 5d chestnut (ACSC $1200 for non-solo use on cover) tied Sydney cds with red R label alongside paying 2½d per ½oz foreign letter rate plus 3d registration fee, couple of minor blemishes.
1914 (Mar 17) double-rate cover to the University of Graz in Austria endorsed "via Adelaide" !!, with very fine Kangaroo 5d chestnut (Cat $1000 as a solo franking) tied by early use of the 'BURRINJUCK/NSW' cds, sealed with pieces of selvedge from NSW 2½d indigo, minor blemishes. Renamed from Barren Jack 15.2.1911. [Burrinjuck Dam provides water for domestic use & irrigation]
1914 (July 14) triple-rate usage of Kangaroo 4d orange Registration Envelope uprated with First Wmk 9d violet (Cat $1000 on cover) tied by 'WONTHAGGI/ 2 /VIC' cds, to Italy with 'AR'-in-oval h/s, poor Italian registration arrival b/s in red, some soiling/toning. 1914 (Sept 11) usage of New South Wales 3d red Registration Envelope with flap & value on face, addressed to "W Brettschneider, Hon Secretary, Philatelic Society of Victoria" with Kangaroo 4d orange (ACSC 15; Cat $600 for non-solo use on cover; minor bend where affixed over flap) tied 'WAGGA WAGGA/NSW' cds paying quadruple the 1d per ½oz domestic rate plus 3d registration fee, no registration label but endorsed number "622" on face in blue pencil, couple of very minor edge bends. Note that the Society is not addressed with the honorific "Royal", which was not bestowed until 1946.

1915 (Apr 6) stampless POW cover with an unusually clear strike of the rare 'PRISONERS OF WAR DEPOT/LANGWARRIN' in green at left, to the Red Cross in Geneva with superb strikes of 'CENSORS OFFICE/GPO/MELBOURNE' over defaced 'PASSED' h/s both in violet, Geneva arrival b/s of 12V15, a couple of insignificant blemishes. 1918 printed POW Envelope endorsed on the flap "B Laeschke, Bourke/NSW", unusually unsealed to Switzerland with 'BERN/18.III.18/BRIEFTRAGER' arrival b/s. Rare. [Bourke Internment Camp was a small facility at Bourke Gaol that housed German nationals deported from Malaya Ceylon Fiji & Hong Kong. Opened in 1915, in 1918 the inmates were moved to Molonglo Camp]
1919 (Aug 18) usage of KGV 4d orange Registration Envelope to Denmark with KGV Single Wmk 1d red & LMult Wmk ½d green x2 tied by 'GRANVILLE/=NSW=' cds, red/white R label, Sydney transit & poor Copenhagen arrival b/s. The rate was foreign letter 2½d + wartax ½d + 3d registration = 6d.
1919 (Dec 2) registered mourning cover with Kangaroos 3d olive & KGV 1½d chocolate tied by 'CASTLEREAGH ST/NSW' cds, red/white R label, 'SINGLETON' arrival b/s. The rate was 1d + ½d wartax + 3d registration.
1920 (Nov 6) Commercial Bank of Tasmania 'PASS BOOK ONLY' wrapper to New Town with Kangaroos Third Wmk 2½d indigo and KGV 2d orange tied by 'HOBART' cds paying triple the 1½d per 2oz commercial papers rate, couple of very minor blemishes. Unusually fine & scarce: those seen have mostly been damaged, or are address panels only; this rate was in effect for three years only from 1.10.1920, reducing to 1d per 2oz from 1.10.1923.
1922 complete 'PARCELS POST' label Edition 'B1254/11.21...' with very fine & well centred Kangaroo 6d blue tied by Melbourne cds, affixed to large-part parcel tag for FH Brunning Seed & Plant Merchants with printed 'PLANTS PERISHABLE' at left, minor peripheral faults caused by the label being deeper than the tag. [The cds is positioned so we can't tell if the stamp is Die II (Cat $450 as a solo franking) or Die IIB (Cat $500).
1923 (Mar 7) commercial cover to Italy with Kangaroos 3d olive & KGV 4d blue tied by 'FREMANTLE/WESTN AUSTRALIA' cds, red & black/white R label, Naples transit & poor Treviso arrival b/s, light overall soiling.
1924 double-rate cover to "Trieste/Italy" with scarce albeit philatelic franking of Engraved 1d, KGV 1½d red-brown & 4d blue (exceptional centring) and Kangaroos 2½d tied by Adelaide cds, large red/white R label, 'TRIESTE CENTRO/ 4B ' arrival b/s. The rate was 4d for the first ½oz + 2d for the second ½oz + 3d registration = 9d.
1925 (Aug 6) usage of Star 'POSTAGE' STO Envelope 1½d scarlet for Vacuum Oil Co, to Germany with 1d green & 1½d red both with 'VOC' perfins added & tied by very fine 'LATE FEE/MELBOURNE VIC' cds.
1927 (Nov 1) commercial cover to "Race Club/Djokja/Java" with KGV 1½d red only & twice redirected on each occasion with Postage Due 20c affixed & tied in turn by cds of 'DJOKJAKARTA', 'BANDOENG' & finally 'GAROET', the first two Postage Dues crossed-out to show the fee was not collected at those offices, various backstamps include postmen's delivery handstamps '1B' and 'B5', minor soiling. A very interesting cover. Ex Martin Frischauff.
1929 cover (240x178mm) to Victoria with exceptional franking of KGV 3d, 1/- Roo & 3d Airmail Type B x16 ! tied by Geraldton (WA) cds, red registration label, damaged in transit & with two (one only partial) 'FOUND OPEN' labels affixed, central fold affects only one stamp. A single Type B Airmail is catalogued at $60 on cover.
1929 (July 2) catalogue envelope (255x175mm) with advertising for Joseph Charles to Melbourne with very scarce franking of SMult Wmk Kangaroo 1/- (crossed by central verrtical fold), KGV Perf 13½x12½ 1/4d pair - the R/H unit creased - and Air Mail 3d all tied by 'USE THE/AIR MAIL' Krag machine cancel of Perth. A very scarce item: 'junk mail' of this size was rarely retained.
The rate is problematic. The domestic letter rate of 1½d per ounce x6 plus airmail supplement of 3d per half-ounce x12 = 3/9d for an article weighing between 5½ & 6oz, plus 2d convenience overpayment. However, in 'Black Swan' of June 2014, Brian Pope illustrated the front page of what was likely the enclosed catalogue & stated that it weighed just under 8oz. Although not endorsed "Printed Matter", the rate is interesting. It was 1d per 4oz x2 + 3d airmail supplement x16 = 50d (4/2d), a short-payment of 3d. Not taxed but we expect this was the rate applied.
Joseph Charles was a Perth auctioneer, real estate agent & 'valuator'. A staunch supporter of the new airmail service between Adelaide & Perth, he was a passenger on one of the first two West-East flights & returned by plane as far as Kalgoorlie, the flight being disrupted by a major storm. On the front of this envelope, he asks his customers to send a return letter by the air service advising the date the catalogue was received. He would have been a lot happier with the responses than would be provided to the same question today!
1930 (Sep 16) cover with Commonwealth Coat-of-Arms in blue on the flap by air to Canberra with scarce franking of punctured 'OS' 3d Air Type A and KGV SMult Wmk Perf 13½x12½ 1d green pair tied by very fine 25mm 'DARWIN/NT' cds, Sydney transit b/s. [Arthur Blakely was a prominent trade unionist who was active in the anti-conscription movement during WWI. Elected to Federal Parliament, between 1929 & 1932 he was Minister for Home Affairs, with responsibility for the ACT]
1931 commercial airmail cover to Bedfordshire carried on the Experimental Air Mail flight with very scarce franking of SMult Wmk KGV 4d olive pair & Kangaroos 9d block of 4 tied by 'HAMILTON/NSW' cds, slightly truncated at left. [A previous owner believed the L/L unit is Die II but we, and our vendor, are undecided]

1935 (June 16) Education Department OHMS cover with 'CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS/State of Victoria and City of Melbourne/1934-35' printed at U/L, double-rate airmail to League of the Empire in London with Kangaroos SMult Wmk punctured 'OS' 1/- single & pair (two units with faults) tied by very fine Melbourne cds, minor imperfections. [The League of the Empire was a mercifully long-forgotten pro-imperial group that actively promoted "the teaching of [British] imperial history...by means of public & school lectures". Although the only branch in Australia appears to have been in Adelaide, the Victorian Education Department was at least in contact with them. Certainly, the curriculum in Victorian schools at least until the 1980s was overtly pro-Britain]
1935 (Dec 3) all-up airmail cover to Finland with Kangaroos 9d violet + Hermes 1/6d tied by Sydney cds, Athens transit & Kuopio arrival b/s (affected by small piece of the flap missing). Scarce fully-paid airmail.
1935 (May 20) to Brisbane endorsed "Per Air Mail / Express Delivery" with Kangaroo CofA Watermark 9d violet and Silver Jubilee 3d blue tied Sydney cds paying the 2d per 1oz domestic letter rate, double the 3d per ½oz airmail surcharge plus 4d express delivery fee, a couple of minor blemishes.
