image 1930 (Dec 16) WA Railways Comptroller of Accounts & Audit OHMS cover sent to Melbourne with airmail ettiquette endorsed "Perth to Adelaide", franked with KGV SMWmk 2d red Die II punctured 'OS' & 3d Airmail Type B punctured 'OS' (ACSC $750 on cover) tied by Perth machine cancel paying 2d letter rate plus 3d airmail surcharge, light vertical bend which just affects the KGV stamp, back flap repaired with tape & minor blemishes. Considerably under-catalogued: the ACSC prices the Type B on cover at the same value as the Type A, even though it lists the punctured stamps themselves at a 75% premium (and gives a 200% premium to the unpunctured Type B on cover).

image 1966 (Feb 9) local cover with QEII 4c red marginal solo being not yet valid for postage, Sydney hand-held roller cancel struck alongside but not tying the stamp and taxed with 'T ____/R.C.S. 3.' boxed cachet in violet, QEII 10d blue affixed to pay double the 5d deficiency & tied by pen cancel, enclosure is a personal note thanking for assistance. The ACSC states [p1] "The decimal issue was placed on sale on 7 February 1966, one week before the official changeover date. This was to enable businesses to obtain advance supplies ... [the stamps] could not be used for postage before 14 February". With the Pre-Decimal stamp used to pay double the 5d letter rate due, this is perhaps the ultimate Pre-Decimal/Decimal combination franking.

image 1971 (July 9) small linen-lined envelope registered airmail to Canada from Anthony Bearings endorsed "Sample Bearing (Hanger Bracket)" on reverse, franked with Flowers 30c plus Navigators $1 Flinders, $2 Bass & $4 King pair tied by 'REGENT [ ____ ]/VIC-AUST' cds with R label alongside & blue/white 'LETTER' label on face to indicate that the item had been paid at the 'first-class' airmail letter rate and was not to be treated as 'second-class' sample or parcel post, 'Registration Section/11/VII/1971/Vancouver BC' transit cds on face and 'RECOMMANDATION REGISTRATION/12/JUL/1971/MONTREAL NO 60' arrival cds on back flap, a couple of very minor bends not affecting the stamps. [The rate was Zone 4 airmail 25c per ½oz x44 for an article weighing up to 22oz (1lb 6oz or 624g) + 30c registration fee] The endorsement explains the weight & high postage rate. A most attractive & rare commercial franking of the three highest denominations from the Decimal Navigators series together on a small envelope. We know of only one other such usage & it is an oversize article] The illustration is above Lot 407.

image 1863 (Mar 24) double-weight mourning cover to the Isle of Wight "via Marseilles" with Perf 13 Diadems 6d purple (folded over at right) & 1/- carmine x2 tied by Sydney duplex, 'RYDE' arrival b/s of MY16/63, small piece of the flap missing otherwise very fine. The rate was 1/- x2 + 6d late fee. [The enclosed lengthy letter is from (later Major-General Sir) Edward Wolstenholme Ward who, in 1853, reported favourably on the minting of gold coins in the Colony & was appointed Deputy Master of the Sydney Branch of the Royal Mint. During the 1860s he urged London to open a Branch in Melbourne, to which he was appointed in 1869.

image POSTAL STATIONERY: Postal Cards 1883 printer's proof for an unadopted 1d+1d Reply Card essay rouletted between the halves, the Lion in the Coat-of-Arms facing Right, the reply-half at the base, & the words "cut or" omitted from the footnote, which is 92mm long, light overall soiling on the message-half. With the issued imperforate card on which the Lion is Facing Forwards, the reply-half is at the top, and "cut or" added to the footnote, which is 97mm long. Ex Ray Kelly, with a copy of his "discovery" piece in 'The Postal Stationery Collector' of May 2003. [Sold at the Prestige auction of 26.9.2003 for $840. image 1846 (July 10) outer to London with fine large-part strike of the huge Hobart GPO d/s in red, rated "4" in red (paid), boxed 'CALCUTTA/GPO/SHIPLETTER/2OC2/[1846]' transit b/s & very fine ' EN /29DE29/1846' arrival b/s both in red & rated "2/3" for an inwards India Letter, faint horizontal fold otherwise superb. A rare routing from Tasmania, per Toulmin Packet 'Eagle' from Sydney via the Torres Straits & India. The service operated out of Sydney at the start of each month. 'Eagle' sailed 2.8.1846. Colin Tabeart at page 107 suggests the mail was transferred at Calcutta to P&O 'Precursor' to Suez, 'Ripon' from Alexandria & HMAS 'Flamer' from Malta, arriving Marseilles 24.12.1846.

image 1846 (Dec 10) missionary's part-entire to London with superb strike of the 37mm 'GENERAL POST OFFICE/ HOBART TOWN/[crown]/10DE10/ VDL /1846' cds in red (the ERD), rated "4" for the shipletter fee with superb straight-line 'SHIPLETTER' h/s in black & ' FO /30AP30/1847' arrival b/s in red, light filing fold otherwise remarkably fine. [Signed "J Allen Manton" who states "...Brother Turner's removal to Sydney has left me with the charge of the New Norfolk station...distressing anxieties of mind arising out of the deplorable circumstances of my circuit...". In 1833-34, he was the first chaplain at Port Arthur, returning there from 1841 until 1846]

image 1860s-80s accumulation of Letter Bills most sent to Green Ponds from Hobart, Launceston and a wide range of smaller towns with many fine to very fine CDS including 'BRIGHTON STATION', 'GEORGE'S BAY' (RRRR), 'GOULD'S COUNTRY' (RRRR), 'GREEN PONDS' (R), 'JERUSALEM' (RR), 'UPPER BAGDAD' (RRRR), 'UPPER BROADMARSH' (RR), etc, a few mostly poorly-struck numeral cancels, also many with wax seals some reasonably complete noted Campbell Town, Falmouth, Glenorchy, Jericho, Longford, Macquarie River, Melton Mowbray, Richmond, Spring Hill and lots of others, various form types annotated, condition is mixed but many are fine with only minor blemishes. image 1869 Hobart town letter simply addrssed to "Mr Gill/Stone Building" with Perf 12 1d SG 69 (perfs at top trimmed clear of the design) tied by bars cancel, boxed 'PRE-PAID/[ ? ] O'CLOCK/7 AP 7/1869' d/s in red, remarkably fine. [Most of Hobart's buildings were built of stone. However, erected in 1830 at 127 Macquarie Street, was the Stone Buildings]

image POSTAL STATIONERY - WRAPPERS: 1910 No Borders ½d blue-green size 135x290mm Pope #W5.1, locally used at 'BUSSELTON' in 1914, readdressed to "Capel", minor blemishes & the folds reinforced with archival tape, Cat $1200 (2002). [The No Border Wrappers are rare used. Of the ½d we know of only three other examples, one of which is also used in 1914. Margaret Hamilton did not have an example. The 1d is even more elusive: Margaret Hamilton's example sold at the Macray Watson auction of 30.3.1999 for $3220]
