1913 (Mar 22) Sydney Morning Herald (imprint on flap) cover to California with scarce combination franking of Kangaroo 1d red pair + NSW ½d blue-green tied by Sydney machine cancel. [The Willamette Paper Co was a subsidiary of the Willamette Valley Lumber Co of Dallas, Oregon. Presumably the letter was about the supply of newsprint]
1913 (Apr 7) use of PPC ('FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HOUSE...') to Germany with combination franking of Kangaroo 1d red + Victoria 'Bantam' ½d tied by 'MACEDON UPPER/VICTORIA' cds. [The message in German is signed "E Davidson". We speculate that the use of this particular PPC and the fact that Mount Macedon was the summer retreat of vice-regal parties is no coincidence]
1913 (Apr 28) cover to Coventry with scarce combination franking of Kangaroo 1d pair + Tasmania Pictorial ½d green tied by 'DERBY/TASMANIA' cds, 'COVENTRY' arrival b/s, a couple of tiny blemishes & light vertical fold between the 1d stamps. [At this time, the Humber Co Ltd was a leading manufacturer of both automobiles & bicycles]

1914 (Apr 13) cover to "Linden/Williams Road/Windsor" with cutout from Kangaroo 1d Letter Card affixed to pay the postage but endorsed "Irregularly/stamped", 'T2D'-in-oval h/s & Postage Due 1d pair affixed but not cancelled. [During most periods, postal stationery cutouts have been valid for paying postage. However, the Post Office Guide of 1909 states at page 50: "The impressed stamps of [postal stationery] may not be used for pre-payment of postage on other articles..." This was still the case in the 1925 Guide: Regulation 118/67 at page 55]

1914 (Aug 11) local usage of St George Starr-Bowkett Ballot & Sale Society (the what!) with Kangaroo 1d red tied by 'ROCKDALE/NSW' cds, large 'UNCLAIMED' h/s, minor blemishes & pinholes. [Starr-Bowkett Societies, named after London surgeon & social progressive Dr Thomas Edward Bowkett, were co-operative not-for-profit financial institutions based on the principle of mutual self-help. Funds were collected from members/subscribers and allocated by ballot for the purpose of financiang new homes. Sounds like a crap-shoot but they were very popular in Australia until the 1960s. Does this indicate the sender was a civilian internee & that the hotel was being used as an internment or detention 'camp'?]
