image 1897 (c.) Essays for a Pictorial Issue Bradbury Wilkinson Portrait 1½d black on pale blue stock with uncaptioned photo of Sugar Cane at left, light patch of discolouration below the stamp. Neither the stamp not the style of the view was adopted. This is believed to be the only recorded example. Ex Ron Butler. [As for the 1888 issue, the stamp was not inscribed 'QUEENSLAND']

image 1897 (c.) Essays for a Pictorial Issue Jubilee Portrait 1d black with '1837' & '1897' in the corner tablets on pale green stock with scene at left of three aboriginal boys with 'VIEW FROM THE BARRON' on the negative & captioned 'BARRON RIVER, CAIRNS RAILWAY', some discolouration, thinned at the top where removed from the archival ledger & with light associated creasing at U/L. Despite the faults, a desirable hybrid essay featuring an unissued stamp, an unadopted heading, and one of the adopted scenes. [Ron Butler's very fine example sold for £3220] The Diamond Jubilee essay was adapted for ½d stamps and wrappers only, and only after the dates were removed. The UPU heading was not required for 1d rate cards, & this style was not adopted for the 1½d cards.

image 1905 (c.) New Design with Four-Line Heading & 'POST CARD' at Top proof with Medallion Portrait 1d in brown, a couple of tiny imperfections otherwise superb. Believed to be unique. [Absent from Ron Butler's collection] This is the same format as for the 1906 scenic issue & we expect these cards were therefore essays for the 1906 header. It is conceded that the fonts were not adopted for the 1906 issue and are as for the 1910 cards but the weight of evidence is in favour of the earlier production date.
