image RARE 1d PINK ENVELOPE SENT TO NZ. VIA N.S.W. CARRIED BY A TOULMIN PACKET SHIP AT THE CASH-PAID 1/- RATE; 30 July 1848 usage of the 1d Pink Postal stationery ENV. (some slight staining and wear hardly detracts) from the Staffs. village of “ROCESTER” (hence the UDC) but cancelled in the village’s head P.O. of “ ” (blue c.d.s.) in Derbyshire and so cancelled with two very faint “28” Ashbourne Numerals. It was prepaid the full "1/-" Toulmin Packet rate to N.Z. via Sydney (so the 1d of the envelope was wasted!). It was then routed via London (red “PAID” transit c.d.s. of 21 July) and Gravesend, and reached “AUCKLAND” 6 months later (v. fine 16 Jan. 1849 cds on the front); it was carried by the Toulmin ship ‘Louisa’ from G.B. to Sydney (8 Aug. to 25 Dec. 1848) and then by the smaller ship ‘Cheerful’ (Sydney c.2 Jan.) on to Auckland (16 Jan. 1849). With detailed research notes. [Ex Capt. T. Ward, 2016.] Cross Reference: DERBYSHIRE, NEW ZEALAND, OVERSEAS DESTINATIONS (Image)
