image UNIQUE(?) 1d RED COVER WITH 'ANONYMOUS' ADDRESS MADE UP WITH PRINTED CUT-OUT WORDS; Remarkable 13 Feb. 1865 env. (slight faults at top left do not detract) sent locally from Chesterfield with 1d Red (pl. 91) tied by fine "CHESTERFIELD/186" Duplex; exceptionally addressed entirely with cut-out printed words (at crazy angles) - "Miss Bingham", "THOMAS BINGHAM", "Esq.", "STAVELEY" and "CHESTERFIELD". Presumably the words were cut from a newspaper (they have text on the reverse) and were intended to make an enclosed Valentine totally anonymous. We cannot recall having seen another 19th century letter that has been addressed in this way!Cross Reference: PICTORIAL ENVELOPES - PRINTED, DERBYSHIRE, VALENTINES, VALENTINES/GREETINGS CARDS (Image)
