image SIR EDWIN LANDSEER (1802-73) AUTOGRAPH LETTER WITH HAND-EMBELLISHED ENVELOPE; 18/20 June 1864 env. sent locally in London - somewhat fanciful penmanship used for the address - with 1d Red tied by "LONDON-W/W/14" Duplex and initialled "E.L." by the famous animal painter Sir Edmund Landseer at lower left; with original contents sent to "Wm. Lyon Esq." on Landseer's crested writing paper with a pictorial lion used in place of the word - "Dear [Lion]" - depicting a classical lion very similar to the famous statues in Trafalgar Square on which he was working at the time this letter was sent. [He accepted the commission for the Trafalgar Square lions in 1858 but they were not completed and installed until 1867.] Remarkable letter from this brilliant and famous painter.Cross Reference: ART AND ARTISTS (Image)
