OVERPRINTED 'O S': 1895 Collectors' Set including 5/- Coin, Postal Fiscals 5/- & £1 reprints, 5/- Map x2 (one with Deformed 'S' in 'OS') & 20/- x2 different, etc, all with 'NSW'-in-Concentric-Ovals cancels (a few of them with the scarcer 'GPO' cancels), plus three others with 'GPO' cancels subsequently handstamped 'Specimen', many with large-part o.g. [John Bell's similar selection of 28 stamps sold for $3378]
All 'OS' Overprints were withdrawn at the end of 1894. It was decided to create collectors' sets by cancelling the remainders, and reprints were made of various obsolete issues to provide sets of 32 different stamps. Of the 1000 sets prepared, 900 sets were cancelled with the 'NSW' h/s. However, after only 159 sets had been sold, public outcry caused withdrawal of the balance & they were destroyed.

OVERPRINTED 'O S': 1895 part-presentation set comprising Diadems 8d, De La Rue 1d to 10d plus 1/- optd in Red, Perf 12 £1 violet & claret with Seriffed 'O S' (not issued thus), Centennial to 1/- (ex 8d), Allegorical 2½d, 1891 Surcharges & ½d grey all CTO with 'GPO'-in-Concentric-Ovals & subsequently with small 'Specimen' handstamp applied in black, generally very fine, large-part o.g. Very scarce.
Public outcry caused the withdrawal and destruction of the remainders of the collectors' sets. However, in respect of the presentation sets, of which 100 were prepared & 50 already distributed, it was decided not to destroy the remaining 50 sets. Instead, they were defaced with the small 'Specimen' handstamp Type 11. A virtually complete set of 34 - missing only the 5/- Map with 'O S' in Red - sold for $3450 at the 'Prestige' auction of 23.9.2011.
