image U.S.A. - AMERICAN CIVIL WAR MAIL RETURNED (FROM VIRGINIA) WITH "SENT BACK TO ENGLAND..." MARK; 12 Apr. 1862 env. (light dusting/toning) from Newport (Isle of Wight) to "Gordonsville, Orange County, Virginia, United States" with 1/- Green (small scratch) tied by a v. fine Newport "560" Numeral (matching cds on reverse) as well as by a fine red "N. YORK BR. PKT./PAID 24" transit cds (20? Apr.) with London(?) red "21/CENTS" alongside, but also with mainly very fine small boxed red London "SENT BACK TO ENGLAND/WITHOUT A REASON/FOR NON-DELIVERY" mark. There is also a very fine large double-oval Washington D.C. "DEAD LETTER OFFICE/P.O. DPt" undated mark on the reverse. This letter was posted towards the end of the brief period (25 May 1861 to 2 May 1862) that mails for the southern states were forwarded at the risk of the sender. Very rare thus; most examples of the returned Civil War covers are dated in early 1861, before the British P.O. advised people of the problems and risks involved in sending letters to the southern states. [The similar - but stampless - 28 May 1861 cover to Virginia in Cavendish's 3 June 2015 'Robert Johnson' auction; lot 884, realised £1,596.] Cross Reference: CIVIL WAR, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ISLE OF WIGHT, RETURNED MAIL (Image)

(small corner fault) from Liverpool/London to Portland/Boston endorsed by steamer "Asia" or "City of NY" (both "Via Queenstown") and both landed at Boston (BR PKT or AM PKT cds's) with "48" charges (cds or numeral). Due to Civil War inflation, they were also struck with the Boston encircled "IN U.S. NOTES" marks (with the daily exchange rates of "71" or "73" respectively). Good pair showing the chronic inflation of US banknotes during the war period.
