WESTRAY - RARE 18th CENTURY INGOING MAIL TO "BROUGH" AT 8d-RATE VIA EDINBURGH; 5 July 1798 EL (small closed tear at top, clear of address) from the "Sunderland Glass Co." with superb "SUNDERLAND" horseshoe nicely placed on lower flap; addressed to "James Stewart Esq., Brough, Orkney" charged "8" with a very fine red "JY/7" transit Bishop Mark on the front. Stewart lived in Brough House (which has recently been fully renovated) on the island of Westray and the letter responds to his complaint about the low price of a cargo of kelp seaweed that he had recently supplied. Probably the earliest recorded ingoing postal cover to Westray.Cross Reference: DURHAM (Image)
