image 1931 50th Anniversary of British North Borneo Company, handpainted stamp size essay in blue, black and Chinese white in the adopted design, only the Chinese wording at the sides differing from the issued stamp, mounted with a raised card surround embossed "WATERLOW & SONS / LIMITED / SPECIMEN" at lower right. Endorsed "appd with Kinabalu in one word, 12/10" and initialled, also with the correct Chinese writing at left side shown in pencil and "Kinabalu one word", the word "Kina balu" carefully removed from the essay and repainted in a single word.
