The only postal marking is a large m/s "6" in black (= 6d to pay), applied by the counter clerk at Auckland PO. Carried as a loose ship-letter. Whitaker, a solicitor, rose to high office in the NZ Govt. Letter dated 11 April 1842 (the first postal h/s at Auckland was introduced in June 1842). Fine & well written up. Ex Derek Holmes.

D/s are Brighton 16 JU 1845, London Paid 17 JU, "Ship Letter London" 17 JU, fair crowned oval "NELSON/NEW ZEALAND" DE 16 & good/fine similar Wellington DE 22?. The Nelson d/s is rare (known only OC 1844-NO 1847); the Wellington d/s is known AU 1842-JA 1848. Transit time 158 days. Rather fragile. Stain at base of central vert fold. Well written up.
