1918 WWI stampless OAS "honour" envelope, to NZ, canc fine strike of "Field Post Office T.M.I." cds 26 SP 18. Used (mostly in Palestine) by the Divisional Train of the Australian & NZ Mounted Division. At this time (Sept-Oct 1918), the PO was based at Jericho. From NZ mounted trooper. Very minor tone & creasing at left edge, otherwise fine. Rare!

1842 pre-stamp entire from GB to NZ, addressed to "Frederick Whitaker Esq, Auckland" & with m/s endorsement "By favour of Captain Ormond" (of the ship "Tuscan"). The only postal marking is a large m/s "6" in black (= 6d to pay), applied by the counter clerk at Auckland PO. Carried as a loose ship-letter. Whitaker, a solicitor, rose to high office in the NZ Govt. Letter dated 11 April 1842 (the first postal h/s at Auckland was introduced in June 1842). Fine & well written up. Ex Derek Holmes.

1845 pre-stamp entire from GB to NZ, addressed to "Harold Macleod, Post Office, Wellington. Carried as a paid ship letter. Endorsed in m/s "Ship Letter Paid", greyish "P8" (should be clearly in red, indicating 8d paid by sender), & black "4" (4d to pay by recipient, as port-to-port charge in NZ). D/s are Brighton 16 JU 1845, London Paid 17 JU, "Ship Letter London" 17 JU, fair crowned oval "NELSON/NEW ZEALAND" DE 16 & good/fine similar Wellington DE 22?. The Nelson d/s is rare (known only OC 1844-NO 1847); the Wellington d/s is known AU 1842-JA 1848. Transit time 158 days. Rather fragile. Stain at base of central vert fold. Well written up. Ex Derek Holmes.

M/s "Ship Letter", "Pd 8" in red (= 8d paid). large black "2" (= 2d to pay). D/s are Whitby JA 30, York JA 31 (blue). "Paid" (London) 1 FE, unframed "SHIP-LETTER/LONDON" 1 FE, , & unframed "AUCKLAND/NEW-ZEALAND" AU 29 1851. All markings fine. Total 7 months transit. Supeb condition for its age (170 years). A real gem. The 1st PO at Aotea, near Kawhia, was in the mission house & was open only July 1860-April 1863, when evacuated. Ex Derek Holmes.

1860 cover (aged) to GB franked FFQ 6d pale brown imperf (SG 14), 3 margins but with edge damage. Barely tied to cover by light "9" in horiz bars Perkins Bacon obliterator. M/s notation (added in GB) above address. B/s fair-good (worn) strike of unframed "NEW PLYMOUTH/NEW ZEALAND" cds JY 3 1860 (latest known date). This d/s actually had the "Z" engraved in reverse & is known 1853-1860. The error is unclear in this late worn strike. Also with fine Llanelly receipt b/s SP 30 60.
