We agree that it is not a double print, in the sense that the paper has not been set to the stone twice. However, the printing is not 'smudged', which would imply a lateral movement as if a thumb had redistributed the ink. Rather, the doubling is quite regular, in the nature of a kiss print.

In the preceeding Perf 12 issue it was normal for the marginal stamps to remain unperforated on one side (or on two sides for corner units); our vendor states that the Perf 13 sheets were fully perforated and that this item represents the only known example of such an error for the 1d.

Rare. Ex John Bell (Goulburn): sold at our auction of 8.5.2013 for $1500. [An unmounted corner example sold for $2800 at our auction of 24.1.2004. At that time this error was uncatalogued. This is the pair now illustrated in the ACSC, where it is stated that all ten examples are accounted for, but that includes a vertical strip of 6 in an institution, leaving only four pairs in private hands]
