Cat No: 15 block of 4

image 1903 Overprints on New Zealand 1/- brown-red from the First Printing with the Watermark Inverted & Reversed and the Major Error 'Tahae Sileni' for 'Taha e Sileni' SG 15 block of 4, characteristic rough perfs, lightly to very lightly mounted, Cat £2600+, as it has been since at least 2009. Ex J Edgar Williams (USA): sold at the Prestige auction of 10.4.2010 for $4660. Only 96 examples of the famous "Thief Shilling" error were sold and this is believed to be the only recorded block. A highly significant and desirable error for the collector of Niue, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Birds or Errors. [William Frazer's pair sold in 2003 for £920. With Campbell Paterson Newsletter front page of May 2008 where the block was featured and stated to be "Unique"] In the native language "Taha e Sileni" = One Shilling. However, by omitting the space between the 'a' and 'e', the typesetter created an overprint that translates as "Thief Shilling"!! The NZ Handbook Vol V at page 438 states that the first 20 sheets in a "distinctive colour, brown-red" were affected. All were withdrawn but 96 stamps had already been sold. The Handbook and Gibbons both fail to note that the watermark is Inverted & Reversed. We are of the opinion that this stamp is significantly undervalued because people focus on the fact that 1200 were printed, rather than that only 96 were sold. As such, it is a very scarce stamp.
