image 1819 LETTER REF. PETERLOO MASSACRE & SIGNED 'GREY' (LATER PM); 20 Aug. 1819 EL to London and datelined at Glasgow but not posted. Contents written by a Mr Meir and states most people of importance in Glasgow are either Tories or Radicals as the Democrats are now called......that fatal occurences at Manchester will I hope keep down the bad spirit which pervades the lower classes almost universally. We are to have a meeting in this neighbourhood on Saturday for the purpose of petitioning for 'annual parliaments' and universal suffrage. Mr Hunt was expected....but his getting into durance at Manchester will prevent his appearance and makes ref. to John Lockhart's 'Peters Letters to his kinsfolk' in the Edinburgh Review. The whole letter apparently posted within separate cover (with postscript by the same writer) to London (to the same addressee) and signed by the future Prime Minister [2nd Earl] 'Grey' [1764-1845] at lower left and with framed "TO PAY ONLY 1d", framed "No.1." Receiving House mark and "WORCESTER/Penny Post" h.s. on front and also rated '1'(d) on front. Fine. Cross Reference: WORCESTERSHIRE, PENNY POST MARKS, AUTOGRAPHS, FREE MAIL (Image)
