1911 STAMP DESIGN COMPETITION: Original artwork of a 'ONE PENNY' design featuring an outline Map of Australia highlighting Agriculture, Mining & Cattle with Kangaroo & Birds at the corners, in India ink on thin board (124x107mm) ACSC #E55, Cat $6000. Plus stamp-size reproductions in claret, ultramarine, grey-lilac or deep dull green on various grades of paper ACSC #E116A-C & the unlisted grey-lilac, Cat $6000. Ex 'Besancon' (II).

The ACSC has attributed this work to ET Luke, probably based on the inclusion of the stamp-size versions. However, the reverse of the card, which originally was significantly larger, has a full endorsement re the entry & is signed "By James..." which can in no way be misconstrued as any part of "ET Luke". Luke worked for The Age newspaper where his reduced designs were produced. We suggest that "James" was a friend or colleague of Luke's who had access to the same equipment] (5 items)
