image 1d Trial Printing in deep carmine on V/Crown (Inverted) Paper ACSC 70PP(4) with Heavy Compartment Lines, characteristic wayward centring, tiny thin at the top & two light bends at U/R, large-part o.g., Cat $15,000. Better centred & more attractive than Arthur Gray's example - "light crease & somewhat aged" - that sold at our auction of 30.10.2015 for $2660. Because the KGV design was a different size from the Kangaroo stamps, it was necessary to re-configure the perforating machines. Our suggestion is that this proof was perhaps from the first perforation trial, and that it appears to have been a dismal failure. The ACSC states that only five examples have been recorded. This includes a strip of three in the AA Vickery Collection in Sydney's Powerhouse Museum, leaving only this & Arthur Gray's ugly example in private hands.

image Smooth Paper 1d salmon eosin ACSC 71S vertical pair tied to small piece by very fine 'WILLIAM STREET/1DE17/ =NSW=' cds, Cat $5000+. A beautiful & extremely scarce multiple. Ex Martin Frischauf from the Italian Hoard: sold for €1238. Michael Drury Certificate (2000) records these as "Sydney No 21 & 22". [Technically, this is a very interesting piece. The eosin shades are usually obvious only after exposure to water. Mint examples have a very different dull appearance. The same is true of stamps on piece or cover (!). However, in this instance, there must have been a higher-than-usual concentration of eosin in the printing ink, producing this vibrant deep shade]
