THE UNIQUE MANUSCRIPT "Ship" WITH 1st-TYPE "ISLE OF MAN" COVER FROM MADEIRA TO LONDON; Amazing 25 Apr. 1778 EL from "Madeira" (with detailed contents ref. cargoes and the guns/men of each ship - comments on imminent war with France and problems "with the Americans", during the War of Independence) to London (fair 13 May arrival Bishop Mark on reverse) having a mainly very fine large 1st-Type "ISLE OF MAN" (IM1; few examples recorded, 1767-83 - crossed by filing fold) on the side-flap with a most unusual endorsement "30 Ship Letters" which presumably indicates that this was the top letter of a bundle of 30 handed in by a Ship's Captain at Douglas (probably blown there en route to Liverpool); even more important is the bold "Ship" endorsement beside a cancelled "2" charge on the front, showing that the letter was initially rated with the standard 2d Packet rate to Whitehaven, but was then marked as an incoming Ship Letter, so the rate was increased to "7" (1d Ship Letter + 2d Packet to Whitehaven + 4d inland on to London). However, in London the real nature of the letter seems to have been ignored and the correct "7" charge was reduced to "4" (merely the inland rate from Whitehaven!). [The only I.O.M. Manuscript "Ship" marking recorded by Tabeart - of 1794 - is in the archives.] Believed to be the only recorded Manuscript Ship Letter of the Isle of Man in private hands and the earliest known Isle of Man Ship letter. Highly Important British Maritime Exhibition Item. Ex Whitney. Sold in our Dec. 2012 sale for £3000Cross Reference: SHIP LETTERS, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, INCOMING OVERSEAS MAIL, PORTUGAL (Image)
