image G.B. 1d RED USED IN PESHAWAR WITH INDIAN "228" NUMERAL ON CONCESSION RATE COVER TO G.B.; Spectacular and very rare 25 May 1860 env. to Cheshire headed & countersigned for the Soldier's 1d Concession Rate for "P[riva]te Samuel Fletcher, H.M. 1st B[attalion]. 7th Fusiliers" and franked by a G.B. 1d Red 'Stars' (one rounded corner) tied by a mainly very fine Peshawar "228" barred diamond cancellation with a partly fine matching 25 May "PESHAWAR" cds on the side-flap, but also having a black boxed "INDIA/UNPAID" on the front (struck in Bombay?). There are also backstamps of "BOMBAY" (3 June, in red), "LONDON" and "STOCKPORT" (12 July). This is a very rare example of the acceptance of a British stamp in an Indian P.O. Parmenter (in his definitive "G.B. USED ABROAD" book of 2016, p.30) says that most examples date from 1855 and records 8 known Indian P.O.s (but not Peshawar); he rates covers at "Rarity H, Price £2,000 to £7,000". Important Exhibition Item from this small place close to the Afghan border.Cross Reference: G.B USED ABROAD STAMPS & COVERS, MILITARY - PENNY CONCESSION RATES, 1854-65 1d REDS (Image)
