image DURSLEY - 1d BLACK & 1d RED COVERS WITH NON-DISTORTED CROSSES - 31 Oct. 1840 env. to Bisley, Gloucs. franked with a fine four margin 1d black, TF plate 4, and tied by a lightly struck red MX; and July 1843 EL to Bewdley with an almost four margin 1d red tied by black MX, both with DURSLEY cds on the back. Both crosses not displaying the asymmetrical characteristic known from this office; the 1d red cover (which is noted in Rockoff & Jackson) in particular demonstrates the distorted effect often seen is not the result of the handstamp itself, as this cover is just nine days after a recorded distorted strike. Interesting duo. (2)Cross Reference: 1840 1d BLACKS, 1841 1d REDS, GLOUCESTERSHIRE (Image)
