image POSTAL HISTORY: 1833 (Nov. 25) entire letter addressed to 'To the Lord Bishop of Norwich' re-addressed to Hereford St. London, superb (Crown) Free datestamp in red, on reverse BUNGAY postal handstamp and Norwich datestamp. The letter is from Frances Sarah Barlee and is a dispute over ownership/use of a pew in her Parish Church. Frances was estranged from her husband Charles with whom she had numerous disputes  and ongoing conflicts. She was imprisoned in Ipswich Gaol for refusing to return to her husband. Accompanied by full typed transcript of the letter, the penultimate sentence of which reads "My Lord - this parish is worse than Sodom & Gomorra and the Church has been made a Den of Thieves". A fascinating window into the past.                       (Image)
