image Falkland Islands: THE EARLIEST RECORDED USE OF AN ADHESIVE STAMP FROM THE ISLANDS, 1877 envelope to Hampshire bearing Great Britain 6d. grey Pl. 15 KF cancelled on arrival in London by “F.B.” in bars Foreign Branch obliterator, endorsed at lower left “Apl. 4/Falkland Isds.” having been written and sent by Lieutenant Frederick Metaxa, officer on board H.M.S. “Volage”, carried on the “Black Hawk” to Montevideo and thence on the “Tagus”, with London transit and Portsmouth May 15 arrival backstamps, also a reproduction photograph of the “Volage”. Ex Barton and Cottis. Photo. Count Frederick Cosmeto Metaxa (1847-1910) later reached the rank of Admiral and served as Naval Aide-de-Camp to King Edward VII. One of only two such officer’s letters recorded from the islands. (Image1)
