image ALAND: 1911 plain postcard to Finland with NSW ½d & 1d tied by Newcastle cds, trilingual 'HELSINGFORS * HELSINKI/[Cyrillic]' cds & redirected with similar & very fine 'MARIANHAMINA * MARIEHAMN/...' arrival cds, the message apparently in Swedish. A rare destination. [Mariehamn is the capital of the Aland Archipelago. After WWI, 95% of the population voted to become part of Sweden. However, in 1921 the League of Nations decided Aland should remain part of Finland as a neutral autonomous region, but Swedish would be the official language! This is the same mob that approved the victorious Allies carving-up of the Ottoman Empire, creating artificial countries including Trans-Jordan, Syria, Palestine & Iraq]
