image TAVISTOCK - VERY RARE 7 YEARS WAR COVER EX INDIA P.O.W. ON PAROLE TO FRANCE; 23 May 1762 EL (full typed transcript) from "Fontenille" while a POW on Parole in "Tavistok" to his uncle in Floransac charged only "10" - possibly posted in Paris. The writer says that letters to him should be addressed to "Mr. Chalier, Correspondent of the French East India Company at Plymouth to be sent on to M. de Fontenille, Captain of the Lorraine Regiment, on Parole at Tavistock." He has not had replies to his letters; he had hoped to be returned to France on May 1, but now thinks it will not be for a few more months. He says that he is still suffering from scurvy, but still almost destitute so that he has suggested to the former Governor of Pondicherry, Georges Duval de Leyrit (1717-64) - also a Prisoner (in Plymouth) - that he should draw a bank bill on his uncle for some money. Rare 7 Years War letter from a POW captured in India; only a handful of pre-1794 letters from British POW Camps have been recorded. Cross Reference: INDIA, FRANCE, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL (Image)

image TAVISTOCK - VERY RARE 7 YEARS WAR COVER EX INDIA P.O.W. ON PAROLE TO FRANCE; 1 July 1762 EL from "Fontenille" while a POW on Parole in "Tavistock" to his uncle in Floransac charged "16" - posted in "RENNES" (fair s. line on the front - possibly landed at nearby St. Malo). The writer says; "I did not allow a single vessel to leave, not even the Caravan, without giving you my news ... I was reduced to such great poverty that I was obliged to draw on you a bill of exchange of one hundred ecus… M de St Sernin, Captain of the Grenadiers in the Regiment, had lent me some money .... [It costs] 54 livres per month for board and lodging without wine or beer. 18 francs a room, wine at 45 sols per bottle ... It is more expensive - double and triple - than in France... The aromatic baths that I am made to take three times a week and the great exercise that I do contributes a lot to my recovery ... a year of siege, or blockade, reduced me to sad misery; plus 6 months voyage in a ship, one on top of the other, and salted meat - never enough - all this was very hard to stomach when I arrived...". image TAVISTOCK - VERY RARE 7 YEARS WAR COVER EX INDIA P.O.W. ON PAROLE TO FRANCE; 22 July 1762 EL (slight staining) from "Fontenille" while a POW on Parole in "Tavistock" to his uncle in Floransac charged "10". The writer says; "Vessels from China have just arrived in which five officers of the regiment named the Chevalier de Viare, Dupuy, Brucamps, Brousse and St Aubin; the rest will arrive soon - there are only those who have been in Bombay that we have no news of, except if you please of the Chevalier de Tondus... Every time that I have had your dear news since the departure of the Paquebot which transports the Governor of India and his advisers from France, I have received three letters from my dear father; my joy is inconceivable....". Rare 7 Years War letter from a POW captured in India; only a handful of pre-1794 letters from British POW Camps have been recorded. Cross Reference: MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL, FRANCE, INDIA (Image)

image TAVISTOCK - VERY RARE 7 YEARS WAR EX INDIA P.O.W. ON PAROLE - TO FRANCE WITH NEWS OF RELEASE; 11 Aug. 1762 EL (ink-etched mark just affects address) from "Fontenille" while a POW on Parole in "Tavistock" to his uncle in Floransac charged "10". The writer says; "We learned from last Saturday's Courier that his British Majesty was prepared to allow us to return to France; for this purpose, they gave orders to prepare ships to transport us. As it only concerns the prisoners from India, I assume that I will be among those who will have this happiness ...". He also gives detailed accounts of what he has had to spend (and on what) while he has been a prisoner; "Since leaving India, I have not bought any linen, socks or other similar things all of which I can do without for the present. I received [from you] 29 guineas twice equating to 400 French livres, the expenditure of which follows for your information...". Rare insight into the experiences of a POW captured in India while in Britain during the 7 Years War; only a handful of pre-1794 letters from British POW Camps have been recorded. image TAVISTOCK - VERY RARE 7 YEARS WAR EX INDIA P.O.W. ON PAROLE REF. IMMINENT RELEASE; 29 Aug. 1762 EL (small ink mark just affects address) from "Fontenille" while a POW on Parole in "Tavistock" to his uncle in Floransac charged "10" (the rate from Paris only as it was sent by official means via London). The writer says; "Finally, the Commissioner has received orders to arm a ship to transport the Indian soldiers back to France. Having communicated this it to us, we are due to leave for Plymouth, and from there, to reach our homeland... I had lost all hope of ever seeing France again, finding me six thousand leagues away, abandoned to a miserable life full of infamy, having before my eyes the most terrible images of an imminent death... The mistreatment that we suffered has severely changed the taste that I have always had for my profession…". Rare letter from a POW captured in India during the 7 Years War who was about to be released; only a handful of pre-1794 letters from British POW Camps have been recorded. image TOPSHAM - VERY RARE 7 YEARS WAR P.O.W. CAMP COVER TO FRANCE & FRENCH MAIL REF. THE P.O.W.; Fine 20 June 1758 EL (unsealed - as per censor regulations?) from "Gobbe de la Gaudinais, Prisonnier de guerre" in "La Prison de Tapson [= Topsham] proche Excetere" (Devon) charged "4" (internal French rate) asking to be exchanged or at least put on parole. Plus 26 Sept. 1757 EL (some dusting & wear at right) from Brest giving Gobbe's father advice on how to approach the British Admiralty to see if the POW was alive or dead, charged "5" with a partly fine "BREST" on the front (but redirected to Derval with ms "Payé a Redon" also on the front). image TOPSHAM - VERY RARE 7 YEARS WAR P.O.W. CAMP COVER SENT TO FRANCE VIA BELGIUM; Fine 1 Jan. 1759 EL (full typed transcript; unsealed - as per censor regulations?) from "Gobbe de la Gaudinais" in "La Prison de Tapson [= Topsham] proche Exterre" to his father in Redon thanking him for having tried - albeit without success - to get some friends to obtain the writer's exchange, but asking him to redouble his efforts. It would have been sent by the Camp authorities by a special cartel vessel (from Exmouth?) but most unusually it was handed into a Belgian P.O. - apparently Breskens although it has the French entry-mark of the blockaded port of "OSTENDE" (partly fine s. line on the front) and charged "20" (foreign + internal French rates). Rare Belgian routing for a very rare 7 Years War cover from a British POW Camp; only a handful of pre-1794 letters from British POW Camps have been recorded.
