image ST. MARTINS - VERY EARLY LETTER POSTED FROM ST. MARY'S WITH "SCILLY" MARK TO LONDON; 10 Mar. 1828 EL (interesting Missionary contents signed by "George Nance" requesting a small salary for a preacher on St. Martins and the inability of the islanders to pay for one) headed from the tiny "St. Martin's Island, Scilly" (it folds neatly to display this heading beside the address and postal markings) and addressed to the "Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge" in London; charged the single rate of "1/1" with a mainly fine (and well indented) St. Mary's "SCILLY" straight-line mark (struck in transit on the largest of the Scilly islands) nicely placed on the top flap. Rare early letter from this small island; believed to be the second earliest recorded cover from St. Martins in private hands. Exhibition Quality. (Image)

image ST. MARY'S - MISSIONARY LETTER WITH FINE FULLY INKED "SCILLY" REF. EXPENSIVE POSTAGE; 5 Jan. 1831 EL from "Scilly" to London charged "1/1" with a very fine and fully inked St. Mary's "SCILLY" mark (filing fold) on the top flap beside the red London arrival cds (10 Jan.). The contents include; "In haste (through the great irregularity of the packet)..." followed by a list of Rev. George Wordley's recent expenses (£32-7s-0d in all including "Post[age]s & [tax] Stamp 7s-0d") and concluding thus; "I have a great number of Receipts in my desk, which I wish I could forward to you by some less expensive channel that that of the Post Office. Your directions respecting them will much oblige...". Good insight into the problems of high postage in the 1830s.Cross Reference: POSTAL REFORMS (Image)

image ST. MARY'S - XMAS DAY USAGE 1d RED COVER WITH "610" NUMERAL & REDIRECTED FOR 1d IN ERROR; 25 Dec. 1868 env. (opened out for display with some dusting and slightly reduced at left) with "a merry christmas/[mistletoe]" device printed on the flap sent to Cambridge with two 1d Reds (pl.96; rubbed where over the edges) tied by very fine rare Scilly "610" Numerals. The letter was redirected to London on 28 Dec., but was oddly charged only 1d; was this an error or was the letter overpaid in St. Mary's, or did St. Mary's have a 1d Late Fee system? Puzzling but very rare Christmas Day cover.Cross Reference: CHRISTMAS INCLUDING CANCELLATIONS, CHRISTMAS/RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS, POSTAGE DUE MARKS (Image)
