EARLY BRITISH OCCUPATION - 'ARMS' MARK ON INCOMING COVER TO BRITISH OFFICER; 5 Mar. 1806 EL (closed tear across address-panel is clear of h.s. and barely detracts) from the addressee’s mother in “Campsie” (Scotland) sent soon after she had heard of his valiant efforts in the Battle of Blaauwenberg (on 8 Jan. 1806). It was posted from London to the Cape “Pr. [Ship] Adeona” and was endorsed as received on “5 Augt. [1806]”; it has one of the earliest recorded strikes of the first British Occupation mark, the oval “[Crown]/POST OFFICE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE” – rare on ingoing overseas mail – on the front. It is also endorsed “Ship’s Bag 2 S[helli]ngs” in red on the front which was the incoming Ship Letter rate (in Dutch currency at this early stage of the Occupation). The very interesting contents also include "...Lord Nelson & of the success of the Glorious Battle of Trafalgar..." etc. Cross Reference: OVERSEAS DESTINATIONS, SCOTLAND, MILITARY (Image)
