CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
Sale No: 842
Lot No: 514

image RARE OVAL "CAPE OF GOOD HOPE/PACKET-LETTER" DATESTAMP ON COVER TO G.B.; 24 Jan. 1818 EL (file folds) to London (Huth & Co) with a very fine strike of the rare oval "CAPE OF GOOD HOPE/PACKET-LETTER" d.s. on the front, Rated '10/6' (treble Packet rate). Carried on the East India Co. Richmond and rear with red wax seal and London arrival d.s. Perhaps 15 examples of this mark - the only C.G.H. Packet Letter mark - have been recorded; the majority are crossed by filing creases. Similar example in our June 2006 sale sold for £1000. Important Cape Ship letter. Ex 'Lady Hope' (2003) Cross Reference: LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, INCOMING OVERSEAS MAIL, MARITIME MAIL, INDIA (Image)

image VERY RARE BOXED "HOLLAND" PRESTAMP MARK - ONE OF ONLY THREE KNOWN (FOR DUTCH MAIL TO THE CAPE VIA G.B.); Feb. 1831 E to COGH ex Rotterdam charged '4'(d) on arrival and sent via London with a mainly fine and extremely rare London Foreign Branch framed "HOLLAND" mark (Jay cat. L1084) on the front, of which only two other examples has been recorded (apart from an 1838 courtesy strike in the P.O. records) and a "Na Posttyd" (too late) mark also on front. Rear with London Foreign Branch d.s. and Ship Letter d.s. It seems that this unusual mark was kept for the rare letters mailed partly prepaid from Holland to the Cape that passed through the London P.O. Important Exhibition Item for Dutch, C.G.H. and London collectors. RPSL Cert. (2014). Example in the Harper collection sold for £550 Cross Reference: LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, SHIP LETTERS, NETHERLANDS, LATE FEE MAIL (Image)

(Tab.Ex1) (vertical fold through centre). Originally rated '4/4" but amended to '4/-' as the India sea postage of 4d. was exempt, as this was a consignee letter. Important exhibition item and probably unique combination of these markings. Ex Robertson. Cross Reference: INDIA, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, SHIP LETTERS (Image)
