BOER WAR: 1900 usage of British QV 1d Letter Card endorsed "on active service" & inside "Pretoria/1900" to Adelaide with strike of the boxed 'LOOSE SHIP LETTER' h/s (Hosking #1435, 61x5mm), Melbourne b/s of 7.1.01 & Adelaide arrival the next day indicating carriage from Melbourne on the English Mail Train. Ex Dale Forster. [Mail from soldiers at the Boer War to South Australia is very scarce. The sender was Major CJ Reade, who self-censored the card at L/L, commander of the Second South Australian Contingent. The addressee was Sir Frederick William Holder, twice Premier of South Australia & a member of the 1897-98 Commonwealth Constitutional Convention. He entered the Commonwealth Parliament in 1901 and was appointed as the first Speaker of the House of Representatives]

BOER WAR: 1900 CofGH cover to a Boer POW on the Prison Ship HMS 'Catalonia' at Simons Bay, poor numeral cancel & very fine 'ROBERTSON/CGH' cds, 'SIMONS TOWN' arrival b/s, surprisingly not censored, flap removed & minor blemishes. The illustration is above Lot 1580.
BOER WAR: 1900 mail from British POWs comprising 1) with 'PRETORIA/7FEB00/ZAR' cds & largely very fine strike of the 41mm '[arms]/7FEB1900/COMMANDANT GENERAAL' cachet in purple, to London via Durban (backstamp); 2) to Devonshire with largely very fine strike of the oval 'WATERVAL KRYGSGEVANGENIS/25APR1900/COMMANDANT VAN DE WACHT' (= Waterval War Prison/Commander of the Guard) datestamp in violet (LRD ?); and 3) large piece to India with fancy-boxed 'BRIEVEN CENSUUR/Waterval Krygsgevangenis' cachet in purple; a few faults but presentable. A rare trio. [It is believed that both cachets were in use for very short periods. In early-June 1900, the POWs were moved from Waterval to Nooitgedacht] (3)
BOER WAR: 1900 Siege of Ladysmith patriotic PPC to Nottinghamshire with Natal 1d tied by double-ring 'LADYSMITH/MR6/1900/NATAL' cds, endorsed by the writer on the face "GStatham/Capn Natal Carbineers/Ladysmith/6.3.19", superb 'NOTTINGHAM/AP2/00' arrival cds, central fold. The message states "British Supremacy for ever. We are rescued after 119 days of siege...a great trial to us all...we were reduced to horse flesh which not at all bad as a substitute...the sick of course suffered severely...the greatest credit is due to this medical department..." The Siege was raised on 28.2.1900.
BOER WAR: 1900 use of Natal ½d Postal Card from a French POW on the Prison Ship HMS 'Catalonia' with message in French headed "SS Catalonia 18.4.1900/[...?] de Durban", posted aboard the ship & taxed with superbe 'T'-in-circle & exceptionelle '5c' handstamps, remarkably fine. [The message states (translated) "...We are all on board the Catalonia...Health is passable, with eating & exercise...correspondence from Johannesburg we sent via Lourenco Marques". He also mentions the loss of the SS 'Mexican' only two weeks earlier]
BOER WAR: 1900 ORC cover to a Boer POW on the Prison Ship "Raslen Castle" (= HMS 'Roslin Castle'), not redirected but with a very fine strike of the oval 'CENSOR POW/CE NIXON BA/AHMEDNAGAR, INDIA' cachet in violet on the face, corner fault at lower-right; also registered Transvaal cover to "Raslin Castle", forwarded to "Ahmednagar Camp/Bombay" with a largely superb strike of the oval censor cachet on the reverse. (2)
BOER WAR: 1900 cover front with VRI Overprints on OFS ½d strip of 3 & 1d tied by poor British Army cds, to Ontario with superb strike of the oval 'CANADIAN CONTINGENT/MAY 5 1900/SOUTH AFRICA' datestamp in rosine at left.
BOER WAR: 1900 (Jun 26) use of Transvaal 1d Postal Card to Zanzibar "via Delagoa Bay", from the German Consulate at Pretoria with very fine 'MACHADODORP' cds, partial '.../LOURENCO MARQUES' transit cds of the next day & 'ZANZIBAR' arrival cds of 1JY/00. Consular mail was exempt from censorship, which is just as well or half the message would have been obliterated because of his pro-Boer comments, the list of towns he had visited & the inference that he had been with President Kruger.
BOER WAR: 1901 (June 4) hand-illustrated cover endorsed "Isaac S Joubert/POW Camp No 1" with light 'CENSOR/GREEN/POINT/PRISONERS OF WAR' cachet at lower-left, to Newlands with 1d tied by Green Point cds, flap removed. Attractive.
BOER WAR: 1901 POW covers to Boer Camps in India or Ceylon both with very fine to superb strikes of the 2-line 'PASSED CENSOR/REFUGEE CAMP, SPRINGFONTEIN, ORC' cachet in violet, the first with oval 'CENSOR POW/BP O'DOWD/AHMEDNAGAR, INDIA' cachet in violet on the face, the other with a light part-strike of the very scarce '[DIYATA]LAWA/MO&SBK' arrival backstamp, both a bit soiled; also 1902 Transvaal cover to "Boer Women Camp/...Springfontein Station", badly stained.
BOER WAR: 1901 cover from ORC & Registration Envelope from Transvaal to Boer POWs on the Prison Ship HMS 'Hawarden Castle' at Simons Bay, the first with 'PRISONER OF WAR' handstamp in violet & forwarded to "Bombay", the other forwarded to "Castle/Capetown" & back to the ship, minor blemishes. BOER WAR: 1901 (June 17) army cover to "Insp-Genl Patiala Police/Patiala State/India" with very fine triple-oval 'CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT/17JUN1910/PRETORIA' datestamp in violet & ERI on Transvaal 1d tied by British FPO cds of the next day, Durban transit & 'PATIALA-STATE/PATIALA/24JL01' hooded-cds arrival, redirected with 'KASAULI' arrival backstamp.
BOER WAR: 1901 (Nov 11) Portuguese PPC 'Vista Geral de Cintra' with letter in English headed "Caldas da Rainha" & signed "JSMarais", to Transvaal with 20r pair tied by partial 'CORREOS/CALDAS DA REINHA' cds, Pretoria Press Censor handstamp & arrival cds, rounded corners. Rare. Some 1440 Boers & their families escaped into Mozambique where they were interned. Later sent to Portugal, where 320 men women & children were housed at the thermal baths resort of Caldas da Rainha!
BOER WAR: 1901 social usage of 'ANGLO-BOER WAR 1899-1900-01/COMMEMORATIVE/POST CARD' with photo of 'Ex-President Kruger' in green, to Johannesburg with GB 1d lilac tied by light FPO cds, superb strikes front & back of 'SUPPLY DEPOT/MAY 23 1901/KLERKSDORP' datestamp in rosine. Superb.
BOER WAR: 1902 (Feb 14; Valentine's Day) endorsed "Anna Botes/Tent A No 3/P Camp" (Potchefstroom) in the Transvaal with light 'PASSED BY CENSOR/POTCHEFSTROOM' datestamp on the flap, to her husband (?) at "Bellevue Camp/Simonsstad/Prissiner of War" with largely fine 'CENSOR/BELLE VUE/PRISONERS OF WAR' cachet in red, a bit soiled. Scarce inter-camp mail, all the moreso for being from a woman.
BOER WAR: 1902 usage of ORC 'ONE PENNY' on Cape 1½d Postal Card to Cape Town with light Springfontein cds & oval 'PRESS CENSOR/24APR1902/SPRINGFONTEIN' cachet in violet, the letter in Afrikaans headed "Springfontein Kamp ORC", very minor blemishes.
BOER WAR: 1902 (June 25) Indian 'ONE ANNA' on 1½a Postal Card with message headed "Amritsar 24 Juin 1902" & largely superb 'PASSED CENSOR/25JUN1902/FORT GOVINDGARH/BOER POW ENCLOSURE' datestamp in violet, to Holland with superb 'MAIL-OFFICE-AMRITSAR-RS' cds, part Sea Post Office transit & very fine Dutch 'E 108'-in-oval postman's handstamp, light toning. Rare. [Some 9000 Boer prisoners were sent to India. Most were held at Ahmednagar, 250km E of Bombay. There were 12 other camps in India, Amritsar being home to Boer agitators between April & October 1902 only]

RHODESIA: 1898-1908 BSAC Arms £100 cherry-red marginal example from the left of the sheet, very well centred, deep rich colour & very fresh, central 2mm Waterlow & Son security punch, glassine reinforcing on the reverse, no gum. Even as a printer's specimen, this is an extremely rare stamp.
Considering that Gibbons list every other ultra-high value of the Empire, including other £100 stamps, it seems very odd that the Rhodesian £100 is not listed, being merely mentioned in a footnote, where it is stated "a number of mint are known". In fact, other sources, state that only two unused/mint stamps have been recorded. It is listed by Scott as #75b, Cat US$180,000 for mint, and in the South Africa Colour Catalogue, it is priced at R4,500,000 (approximately A$390,000). In 2011, a Swiss auction house sold an unused example - described as having "part original gum, some minor toning" - for €120,000. A Sydney firm has sold two examples, similar to the current stamp but with filled security punches, for $34,000 and $23,000 resepectively.
