1948, MacQuarie Island, special flight Convair Catalina Amphibian A24-104, cover fwd. to England. In July the expedition engineer passed away, and a replacement was rushed to the island by air. There was no public announcement of the flight as usual, but a note appeared in newspapers that prepaid letters could be prepared and sent to the island. The flight took place 4 August 1948, carrying this cover. On arrivial it received the circular "A.N.A.R.E MacQuarie Is. 4 AU 48" postmark (Milner B2a) in black, and the scarce "Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition 1947" cachet (Milner BC1b) in purple. (Milner only mentions much more commeon cachet BC1a for this flight). Lot includes newspaper clipping announcing the flight and handwritten note dated 19 July 1948 carried with the cover.
