Sale No: 250
Lot No: 3558

image c.1880 fan-shaped (137x125mm) chromolithographed scene on paper of a football match, with red flags atop the goal posts but no behind posts, many players wearing shirts with a red sash (Essendon ?), some adhesion on reverse from being stuck into a Victorian-era scrap album. One of the most attractive early Australian Rules Football images we have ever seen.  [Although some grounds had behind posts as early as 1866, it wasn't until 1897 that 1 point was scored for a behind. Until then, they did not count toward the score] (Image1)
