image PIONEER BALLOONIST JOSEPH SIMMONS (1834-88) - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED REF. FLIGHT IN WALSALL; 16/17 Aug. 1874 env. (minor wear; small tear at top) with 1d Red tied by superb "WALSALL/834" Duplex addressed to London. The original contents were written and signed by the pioneer English balloonist, "Jo[seph]. Simmons" to a lady friend: “This is a horrible town, and I don’t care how soon I soar out of it. Yesterday I was preparing the balloon in a vast, sombre, empty, echoing room, and for a great part of the day [I was] shut up quite alone; it gave me the blues, or rather the blacks…The Secretary had many applications during the day from people desirous of seeing the balloon; but he refused every one...”. Rare letter from a professional balloonist whose flight (as the main event of the Walsall Summer Fete) on the day this letter was posted was a total success. With copies of relevant 1874 articles from the local papers. [The previous month Simmons had piloted his balloon to enable a free-flight pioneer M. de Groof to try out his apparatus over Chelsea: De Groof plummeted more than 200 feet to his death. Simmons went on to cross the Channel in a balloon in 1882 (by accident!) and was eventually killed in a balloon crash in 1888 during a flight at the Irish Exhibition in London.] Cross Reference: THE FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR, 1870-71, BALLOON MAIL, STAFFORDSHIRE (Image)
