THE UNIQUE FERRARY & BURRUS UNUSED PLATE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE 1848-59 ONE PENNY
1857-59 1d. red on bluish, complete plate reconstruction of twelve positions, unused without gum as issued, all being well margined with predomination of large margins, the second position, which was repaired in the Ferrary and Burrus collections, has been replaced by an example in good condition, three other examples have small faults and one repaired, in no way detracting from this great rarity, the only available reconstructed sheet of this denomination in unused condition, the other reconstruction being part of the Tapling collection in the British Library, a very impressive exhibition assembly

1857-59 Post Paid 1d. red, a vertical pair displaying complete sheet margin at top, excellent margins on three sides, positions 2/5, cancelled by target cancels on 7.2.1859 envelope from Port Louis to Petite Savanne, with dispatch crown 'MAURITIUS/GPO' ds on reverse, pair removed and hinged to cover with crease between stamps not affecting the designs, an exceptional local destination
Note: The cover has no evidence of any village datestamp on receipt, which leads us to presume that Petite Savanne was a next door village to Grand Savanne, this being the main post town for the district of Savanne

1857-59 Post Paid 1d red on greyish, vertical strip of four, positions 1/4/7/10, complete to mainly wide margins except in top left corner, tied by oval bars cancels on folded cover from Port Louis to Bordeaux, with up to 7 1/2 grams '8' charge in France and red French entry cds alongside, various cds's on back including 'G.P.O./DE9 1859/MAURITIUS', transits and arrival in France, the top adhesive with corner fault and horizontal cover crease, still though an attractive and rare usage

1857-59 Post Paid 1d red-brown, position 9, touched in very small place at upper right corner, otherwise good to large margins, cancelled by Mahebourg numeral '1' in green, small corner crease at lower left of little significance for this exceedingly scarce usage in green, as far as we can say unique. Note: One further example of this cancellation in green has been brought to our attention, this being a much more vivid and crisp strike

1857-59 Post Paid 1d. red-brown on greyish, position 9, a very fresh and very well margined example, tied to printed matter from Port Louis to Paris, neatly tied by 'G.P.O./DE6 1859/MAURITIUS' cds, repeated on reverse but struck one day after, the only usage recorded of this datestamp on cover, further enhanced by the very rare usage of the printed circular rate to a destination overseas, very fine and appealing
Note: The few examples known off cover and the present item with this cds used on the franking, all show the same date of usage, 6.12.1859

1857-59 Post Paid 1d. red on bluish, two vertical pairs, positions 3/6 and 8/11, mainly large margins, one pair barely touched on one side, on up to 1/2 oz folded entire letter from Port Louis to Chalon-sur-Saône, France, dated 8.2.1860 and endorsed 'pr Columbian', both pairs tied by oval bars cancels, one additionally tied by '8' due marking on arrival, with red French entry at lower right and backstamped on receipt, pressed vertical crease affecting one stamp, hardly detracting from this very rare franking of great appearance
Note: The P&O 'Columbian' left Port Louis on 8.2.1860 arriving to Suez on 25.2, where the mail was transferred to the P&O 'valletta' for onward transmission to Marseille via Alexandria, reaching its destination on 4.3.
