image ASHBURTON - ONE OF ONLY TWO KNOWN SHIP LETTERS - RED MANUSCRIPT "Ship Letter" MARKING; 19 July 1811 E (minor flap tears; toned filing fold across address clear of manuscript markings) from "Cambridge [Mass., U.S.A.]" to London charged "1/2" with a fine red Manuscript "Ship Letter" at top left along with a mainly fine black "ASHBURTON/1294" lined mileage (filing fold; overlapped by a mainly very fine scarce oval London "SHIP-/[Crown]/LETTER"; Rob. S11), having a fine red 24 Aug. London arrival c.d.s. on the top flap; the 1s-2d rate includes the 4d Ship letter rate plus 10d inland for the 194 miles up to London. With full typed transcript of contents ref. the American enemies of Britain [that were soon to lead to the "War of 1812"] written by Benjamin Waterhouse [1754/1846 introduced vaccination to US; founder Harvard Medical School in 1800] ; "...it is a fact that there is a majority of people in this country heartily disposed to go to war with England...".
