image MISCELLANY OF VERY EARLY MARKS, N.W.T.P.O. & SOUTH EASTERN RLY. 'MAIL GUARD' MARKS, GRAND NORTHERN T.P.O., ETC: Diverse group includes 14 Sep. 1842 EL London to Hitchin bearing a mark believed to have been used to cancel mail on the train (A & H type 35); 5 Nov. 1842 parcel wrapper (endorsed "per Train") carried by 3 p.m. train Glasgow to Edinburgh and charged 8d; Aug 1856 env. (folded) to Westminster having fine strike of "North W.R." mail guard's mark in red on reverse and the scarce "X" mark of an 'ordinary' inspector on front; 1 Apr. 1856 env. to Warwickshire with fair strike of "South E Ry." mail guard's mark in red; Group of 3 covers c.1844-56 with Grand Northern "M/NR" in circle marks (W6), all in red, the 1844 cover additionally having boxed "POSTED AFTER/7 O'CLOCK AT NIGHT" mark. Lot also includes various other Railway associated items incl. KEVII ½d & 1d adhesives each in blocks of four cancelled with Tonbridge Station Office c.d.s. of 1 Jan. 1902 (First Day of Issue). Generally one, two or three good examples of each number. We note W682b, a superb mark on part wrapper to York dated 12 Apr. 1862. Rated Rare. Other scarcer types incl. image SCOTTISH T.P.O.s - EDINBURGH & NEWCASTLE S.C. AND EDINBURGH & BERWICK S.C. - EARLY COVERS INCL. SEVERAL RARE TYPES: The mostly QV group of cards & covers written up on album pages. Lot includes the very rare "131/S.T." cancel on an off-paper 1d red plate (W785). We note several examples of the first dated "EDINBURGH/S T" canceller (W785a & W786), with 2 unusual 'varieties' of the latter, being day & month transposed and "S" inverted; 2 examples of the Edinburgh & Berwick Sorting Tender marks, W787, coded "M" & "A", the latter, on Great Eastern stationery being quite scarce. Remainder of covers are Edinburgh & Newcastle types incl. examples of W775, W776 (2 types), W778, W780 (2) and W782 (2). Cancels are mostly fine throughout. image SCOTTISH T.P.O.s - THE CALEDONIAN RAILWAY - 19th. CENTURY COVER COLLECTION: The 1848-1907 collection of cards/covers, well researched and written up on album leaves. Includes various different types of "CR" mark both with and without 'dots' in red and black. One or two examples of each of most Wilson listed types W632a (red & black), W633, W634, W635 (red & black), W643 (red & black - one being Aug 1865 cover from India to Elgin), W645 (red & black), W649, etc. Also a trio of KEVII postcards with W658, W658a & W657b marks, the latter also with a fine 'Star P' mark of Perth (W675). Lot also includes a group of PPCs depicting Carlisle, Edinburgh & Callander Stations and various engines plus a 12 Jul. 1889 postcard to the Company Secretary enquiring when the new Caledonian railway Hotel in Perth was to be opened. image SCOTTISH T.P.O.s - NORTH WESTERN T.P.O.: Mainly QV range of cards/covers from 1853 onwards showing a variety of North Western marks, many scarce. We note "E/NR" in circle types incl. Wilson type W8 cancelling 1d red imperf. on 1853 cover to Birmingham, scarce thus, and Jan. 1857 letter sheet to York with similar mark (apparently unrecorded by Wilson), W10 in black to Newport, Salop; "M/NR" in circle (W11) on 1861 env. to Manchester, 'Star' mark W19 on 1865 env. to Peebles and "N.W./R.P.O./E" in circle (W17) on 1872 London to Cumberland cover. Also, the "L.C./R." in circle mark, W840 (believed to be Lancaster to Carlisle) on Aug. 1863 cover London to Lockerbie. Various other dated cancels incl. W22, W25, W26a, W61, etc. and the scarce W24 'lozenge' marks in both red & black i.e. evening & morning. Lot also includes 1908 Regd. env. from Grange-over-Sands o London marked with diagonal blue lines having been deemed 'too fragile for apparatus'. (14 covers) (Image)

Mainly Edinburgh & Carlisle or Glasgow & Carlisle types, with scarcer/more unusual marks incl. Edinburgh-Carlisle S.T. duplex on Aug 4 1874 cover (reduced) to Daventry (W705), Edinburgh-Glasgow S.T. duplex (W754) cancelling 1/- green on 24 Nov. 1869 part cover to Yokohama (sadly a stamp has been cut out), 15 Sep. 1866 London to Peebles cover with "C&G/R.P.O." in circle mark of Glasgow-Carlisle S.C. (W718), 21 Jun. 1894 Regd. env. with special Glasgow S.T. Registered canceller (W751), Carlisle & Ayr S.T. cancels on covers dated Jun. 1875 & Nov. 1878 (W755), etc. Also in the lot are covers with marks of the Greenock S.T. (W838), Galloway S.T. (minor wrinkling) to Edinburgh with 1d Red (creased) tied at foot by near fine "WORKSOP/922" duplex but also further tied by a very fine "131/S T" mark (W785), having a very fine matching "EDINBURGH/ST" c.d.s.
