(1 Sept.) on the front along with a Montreal "UNPAID 5" mark (because the letter had just missed the ship for Quebec and so went on the next ship, which landed at NY and so the extra 5c was due for US transit). (slight wrinkles and horiz crease all well clear of stamp) from Edinburgh to Ottawa with 6d Mauve oddly placed upside down and in the wrong corner in relation to flap and address) tied by a v. fine "EDINBURGH/131" Duplex and intended for the Canadian Packet (6d) rather than by British Packet via NY (7d). However, it missed the canadian Packet and so went on the Cunard S.S. 'Java' to NY, with the result that it has the black Handstruck "d1" (of Liverpool; filing crease) which was changed to "3[d]" (nearest amount to 2½c equivalent of 1d) in blue on arrival in Canada. The rate changed on 6 Jan. 1870 to 3d by either route while this cover was in transit (8 Jan. 1870 Ottawa arrival cds on back) but the rate still applied as of the date of posting.Cross Reference: SCOTLAND, TRANSATLANTIC MAIL, POSTAGE DUE STAMPS & COVERS (Image)

image MAURITIUS - UNDERPAID 6d-RATE COVER "BY SOUTHAMPTON" WITH H.S. "1d", "4d" & RARE "7d/TO PAY" MARKS; Possibly Unique 27 Feb. 1868 mourning env. (some edge wear neatly hinge-reinforced) from Rugeley (Staffs.) to "Llewellyn, Mauritius" with 4d Vermilion (corner wrinkle) and 1d Reds (2; pl.99); one 1d is tied by a fine "RUGELEY/660" Duplex and the other stamps are tied by fine single "660" Numerals (as per the rarely adhered to P.O. regulations). Unfortunately for the sender, this Southampton route was discontinued along with the British Packet route via Marseilles with effect from 28 Feb. 1868! This was due to the Mauritius sailings becoming unprofitable, partly due to the decimation of the Mauritian population cause by malaria in 1866/7 (see Moubray p.321). As a result, this letter was sent via Marseilles and by the entirely French Packet service, so there is a black London Handstruck "4d" (the deficiency between the 6d rate and the 10d French packet rate) with a matching "INSUFFICIENTLY/PREPAID" as well as the red London h.s. "1d" Accountancy Mark (1d credited to Mauritius from the 6d paid in G.B.). On arrival in Mauritius, it appears that 7d Postage Due was charged (the 4d deficiency plus only half the 6d fine) all of which was to be credited to G.B., hence the blue Port Louis Handstruck "7d/TO PAY" on the front. This 7d h.s. is thought to be the rarest of the Port Louis set (from 1d to 1/-) used there in the 1864-75 period [Ruffle/de Pitray only recorded 3 h.s. 7d's compared to 156 6d's!] An amazing combination of Handstruck Numerals on one cover, and understandably rare because it was entirely due to the letter being sent on almost the same day that the Packet routes were cancelled! Marvellous Exhibition Item.Cross Reference: MAURITIUS, STAFFORDSHIRE, POSTAGE DUE MARKS, POSTAGE DUE STAMPS & COVERS (Image)

The only route to Nicaragua at this date was by British Packet from Southampton and the rate had been 2s-3d (for the ½oz) from 1 Jan. 1842 until 31 July 1859, but from 1 Aug. 1859 the rate had been reduced to 6d, so it seems that this letter was overpaid by 1s-9d! Hence the (London P.O.?) endorsement - presumably to enable the addressee to advise the sender of this rate reduction! Early ingoing mail to Nicaragua is extremely rare, and we have only recorded five other pre-1900 GB QV Covers to this area. None have appeared in Cavendish's auctions since 2000 and there were no covers to Nicaragua in the Gilbert Wheat Collection. Extremely rare destination and a most colourful franking. [Ex S.G. retail shop, Aug. 1981, £350.] Cross Reference: NICARAGUA, BEDFORDSHIRE (Image)

image U.S.A. - AMERICAN CIVIL WAR MAIL RETURNED (FROM VIRGINIA) WITH "SENT BACK TO ENGLAND..." MARK; 21 Nov. 1861 env. (slight dusting/toning & tiny closed tear at top well clear of stamps) from Edinburgh to "Warrenton, Virginia, North America" with 6d Lilac Pair tied by light "EDINBURGH/131" Duplexes having a mainly very fine red "N. YORK BR. PKT./PAID 24" transit cds (8 Dec.; inverted) with London(?) red "5/CENTS" Accountancy Mark alongside, but also with very fine small boxed red London "SENT BACK TO ENGLAND/WITHOUT A REASON/FOR NON-DELIVERY" mark. There is also a mainly fine large double-oval Washington D.C. "DEAD LETTER OFFICE/P.O. DPt" undated mark on the reverse. This letter was posted in the middle of the brief period (25 May 1861 to 2 May 1862) that mails for the southern states were forwarded at the risk of the sender. Very rare thus; most examples of the returned Civil War covers are dated in early 1861, before the British P.O. advised people of the problems and the risks involved in sending letters to the southern states. [The similar 12 Apr. 1862 cover to Virginia in Cavendish's 11 Mar. 2021 auction, lot 884, realised £1,488 inc. BP.]Cross Reference: SCOTLAND, CIVIL WAR, TRANSATLANTIC MAIL, RETURNED MAIL (Image)

image UNITED STATES - UNIQUE(?) 6d LILAC COVER BY SHIP TO N.Y. WITH NY "5" IN CIRCLE AS CANCELLATION; Extraordinary 17 Apr. 1861 EL (ref. latest commodity prices) ex "London" to New York by steamship "Hammonia" (Hamburg-America Line) franked with G.B. 6d Lilac (tiny scratch just clear of profile) tied only by a very fine New York "5" in circle incoming Ship Letter charge-mark (the 6d Ship Letter rate for mail to port of arrival - introduced in 1799 - had been reduced to 5c from 27 Feb. 1861). There are no other postal marks, so it seems that either this letter was handed straight to the Ship's Captain (in which case the 6d stamp was wasted) or it had been handed in to the P.O. as a Ship Letter for the U.S. (at the correct 6d rate) and somehow it had escaped postmarking in London (perhaps tucked into the flap of a larger letter?). Whatever the reason, this appears to be an entirely Unique (?) example of a British Surface Printed stamp on cover cancelled only by the New York "5" in circle mark. image UNITED STATES - ALL 2d BLUES FRANKING 1s-0d RATE MOURNING COVER WITH PLATE 8 + PLATE 9; Very fine and attractive 10 Dec. 1861 mourning env. (very broad black edges as the Duke had passed away earlier that year) from Maidenhead to Boston with Plate 8 2d Blues (5; Pair + 3 singles) and Plate 9 2d Blue - rare combination different Plates - all tied by fine "MAIDENHEAD/192" Duplexes with red London "21/CENTS" Accountancy Mark (2; credit to US) and Boston "AM. PKT./PAID" cds on the front. The cover is addressed to "Honble. E[dward]. Everett", former Governor of Mass., who had recently (1860) run unsuccessfully for Vice-President against Lincoln, and the Civil War had started in April 1861. Everett had espoused some pro-slavery views back in the 1820s, but was a Unionist by 1860. The envelope has been endorsed on the reverse; "The dowager Duchess of Sutherland, written from Vichy in France"; she was a campaigner against slavery and arguably Queen Victoria's closest lifelong friend. This cover has a remarkable story to be found if the contents can be traced...! [Ex Spink GB sale, 11 June 1997, lot 149; £282 inc.
