THE FULL SET - THE 1st-ISSUE SURFACE PRINTED SET (4d, 6d & 1/-) ON COVER TO FRANCE (1s-4d RATE + 6d LATE FEE); Spectacular and very rare 28 June 1859 EL from London (Hambro & Son cachet on the front) to Paris with an exceptional franking of the first three Surface Printed stamps of G.B.; 1/- Green (wing margin at right beneath the 6d) + 6d Lilac + 4d Rose-Carmine all tied by very fine London "15" Diamond Numerals with red London "PD" (Paid to Destination) in oval and Calais transit cds (29 June) on the front. This was the 'above 3/4 oz & up to 1oz' 1s-4d quadruple rate plus the 6d Late Fee. As it was a last-minute posting (the 6d Late Fee only applied from 7pm to 7.30pm at this date at London's Chief Office) there is no London backstamp - presumably it was omitted in the rush. We do not recall having seen this rare combination of the first three Surface Printed stamps on a cover to France before.
