RARE BLACK HORSESHOE "ISLE OF MAN" ON COVER FROM DOUGLAS TO KESWICK; 30 Aug. 1805 EL (some closed tears around seal clear of mark) from "J[ohn]. Peche" (East India Co. Major-General and friend of Southey & Wordsworth) at "Douglass" to his wife in Keswick with a very fine "ISLE OF MAN" Horseshoe (IM3; only recorded 1803-8 in black - a shorter period of use than in blue - slight creasing does not detract) across the join on the reverse. Charged "3[d]" (Packet rate to Whitehaven) and then "8[d]" (extra 5d on to Keswick), though unusually headed by the sender above the address "Isle of Man" with the date (perhaps to try to make the P.O. think it was a free letter?!) The contents describe the writer's bad seasickness on the overnight crossing to the island and his safe arrival that morning. [Ex Cavendish 12 Sept. 2014, lot 2027; £380 + BP.]Cross Reference: CUMBERLAND (Image)
