GREAT BRITAIN - G.B USED ABROAD STAMPS & COVERS

Sale No: 836
Lot No: 1432

Cat No: Collection

image PANAMA/PERU - BLOCK OF FOUR + PAIR OF 4d VERMILION TIED BY "C35" NUMERALS ON COVER TO G.B.; Very attractive 21 June 1875 env. (from the Pollard Correspondence; minor wrinkling as usual) from H.M.S. 'Tenedos' at Callao (per ship's log) to G.B. endorsed "Via West India Mail" with remarkable franking of 4d Vermilions (Block of Four + Pair; pl.14, HK/IL & HI/JI, one of latter with trivial wrinkle) for the double 1/- rate, all tied by fine to v. fine British P.O. in Panama "C35" Numerals matching the very fine small "A/PANAMA" cds (5 July) alongside, also having a 30 July "NEWARK" arrival backstamp. The 2-week gap between the writer's date on the front and the Panama cds is due to the ship having been at Callao (1,500 miles from Panama) when the letter was written. Marvellous Exhibition Item. [The twin Pollard cover to this, dated 18 May 1875, was recently sold in the 'Dubois' Collection (7 Sept. 2020, lot 5604; realised CHF 1,500 + BP) and has stamps of the G and F rows, probably from the very same sheet.] [Ex Michael Jackson, Feb. 1981; £500.] Cross Reference: PANAMA AND CANAL ZONE, PERU (Image)

image PANAMA - PAIR + SINGLE OF 6d GREY TIED BY "C35" NUMERALS ON COVER TO G.B.; Attractive 31 Mar. 1876 env. (from the Pollard Correspondence; minor wrinkling as usual) from H.M.S. 'Tenedos' in the Pacific (probably off the coast of Chile) to G.B. endorsed "Via West India Mail" 6d Grey Pair & single (pl.14) tied by mainly fine British P.O. in Panama "C35" Numerals matching the very fine small "A/PANAMA" cds (20 Apr.) alongside, also having a 18 May "NEWARK" arrival backstamp. The 3-week gap between the writer's date on the front and the Panama cds suggests that the ship was off the coast of Chile when the letter was written. Marvellous Pair for the previous lot.
