BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN PRE-P.O. LETTER SENT BY "THIS MY SERVANT" FROM NEWARK TO LONDON; 19 Apr. 1625 EL (internal stain, address fine) was sent from the tiny village of "Knyveton" (Notts. - known as Kneveton or Kneeton today; 7 miles from Newark) by the local land-owner "George Lassells" (MP for Nottingham for 1621 only) to London ("[I] have sent this my servant" with the letter as there was no postal system at this date). It is beautifully addressed; "To the Right hoble. Sr. Robert Na[u]nton Knight, Master of his Matie's Wards & Liverys & one of his Maties most hoble. Pryvie Councell at his Howse at Charring Crosse, give these." It concerns some "Records of ye Tower [of London]". The addressee Sir Robert Naunton (1563-1635) was a career politician who served as a spy on the Continent for 3 years under Elizabeth I, was James I's Secretary of State, and an M.P. for various places at different times. He also held office under Charles I (who had come to the throne less than a month before this letter was written), hence the style of address on this letter.
