image CHATHAM PRISON SHIPS 'ROCHESTER', 'BUCKINGHAM' & 'SANDWICH' - LETTERS EX FRANCE TO P.O.W.s BUT HELD IN PARIS P. O.'s "CABINET NOIR": Very fine 10 Nov. 1806 EL to "Jean Millau, matelot, a Bord du Ponton Le Rochester en rade a Chatam" with mainly fine "P.30.P/MONTECHE" plus fair red Paris "P.P.P.P." on the front and with "15 Cms" prepaid rate on reverse. It was initially sent unpaid but the Monteche PO returned it to sender with the PP mark endorsed "Renvoyee a son timbre pour etre affranchie" on the front, and the sender re-posted it and paid the postage. There is a small diamond hole cut away (? by censor) at the top left of the contents; Very fine 27 Nov. 1806 EL to "M Victor Vidal, Prisonnier de Guerre a Bord du Ponton Le Buckingham a la Riviere de Chatam" with mainly fine "P.32[?].P/CASSIS" on the front but with no Paris marks and with "11D" prepaid rate on reverse. There is a small part of the contents cut away (? by censor) at the top left.; Fine 3 Dec. 1806 EL to "Pierre La Maal, Prisonnier de Guerre a Bord du Ponton Le Rossester a ... par Calais...Chatam" with fine "P.21.P/LANNION" on the front beside a fine red Paris "P.P.P.P." and with "10" prepaid rate on reverse. There is a small wax seal (of the censor?) at the top left of contents.; and very fine 11 June 1807 EL to "M. Henriquet Fourrier, au 67 Regiment, Prisonnier de Guerre a Bord du Ponton Le Sandwich a Chatam" with partly fine "P.53.P/ETAIN" on the front but with no Paris mark and with "15" prepaid rate on reverse. There is a small piece torn away at top right of the contents. All are unsealed, containing family news etc., but clearly never delivered. These letters still in transit after Napoleon's suspension of Mail exchange from 21 Nov. 1806 are thought to have remained in the Paris P.O.'s Secret Office ("Cabinet Noir").
