I had a very good collection over 500 & many of them were ones not often got in England but I gave it up & since I have commence [sic] again & have at present only about 130. I have written to two or three people in Germany for stamps...It is great fun getting & sending stamps...I dare say yr brother is very fond of his stamp book I know I used to be..." [Sir Charles Vere Ferres Townshend, was commander of besieged British Forces at Kut (Mesopotamia). Townshend, popular with his troops but a shocking narcissist, spent much of his time at Kut cabling London seeking a promotion! He was among the nearly 3000 captured by the Turks, of whom only 1180 survived a death march from Kut-al-Amara to the railhead at Ras-al-Ain (in modern Syria). Befriended by Enver Pasha & treated as an honoured guest, Townshend expected a hero's welcome in London but was met by just his wife, daughter & dog]
