image 1865-67 Stamps, the collection well written up on pages comprising Aberdeen (30) with ½d yellow-brown, ½d slate-blue block of 27; Clarke & Co of Edinburgh (8, with corner block of six); Edinburgh & Leith Circular Delivery Co (62); Edinburgh & Leith Parcel Delivery Co (183) with four blocks of fifteen of first issue 2d, second issue 2d imperf blocks of 18 and 42, 2d rouletted block of nine, 3d imperf block of 54; Glasgow (132) with ¼d black pin perf sheet of 66 (three with cracked plate variety), ½d scarlet imperf block of 12, pin perf block of 54 (two with damaged plate variety); Liverpool (206) with ¼d perf 13 block of 98 (just one stamp removed from sheet), ¼d imperf block of twelve, ½d block of 72; London (210) with ½d blue error of colour (crayon cancel), pin perf ¼d block of 65 (just one stamp removed from sheet), imperf ½d greenish grey sheet of 66 (divided into seven blocks), ½d purple pin perf sheet of 66; Metropolitan (89) with ¼d block of eight showing pre-printing paper fold across four stamps, ¼d block of 54, ½d block of 18, ¼d orange error of colour (or a proof) with double perfs at right; London & Districts (10) with perf 13 ½d claret block of six, three with ¼d error; National (89) with ¼d green, ½d block of 77, ¾d block of ten; also a few forgeries. image 1865 (Nov 24) Printed circular for "J.E Vernon, 54 Leith Street, Edinburgh, Magic Lanterns & Slides at Reduced Prices. Dissolving Views Exhibitions conducted in Town & Country at a moderate charge ..... large lanterns & slides lent out. Terms on Application. Reduced prices to schools", addressed to "J.F Pillans Esq, 7 Tentallan Place, Grange". Franked by Edinburgh & Leith perf 11½ ¼d dull mauve (S.G. CD10a, fault at base) cancelled "R.B & Co", endorsed "This was delivered at my house yesterday afternoon fastened by a wafer, J.F Pillans, 24th Nov. 1865", the inside lettered "B", a few pin holes, otherwise fine. This circular was used as part of the Post Office evidence in the 1867-69 court cases that led to the suppression of the Circular Delivery Companies. Illustrated in "Farthing Delivery" by D.S Patton, which mentions "a 20th February 1866 report from the Secretary to the Post Office, Edinburgh, referring to a Circular enclosed in an envelope fastened with gum and delivered at Mr Pillans house in The Grange". image 1867 Cover with "Brown & Tregilgas, Clothiers, Edinburgh" embossed on the flap, addressed to "J. Gonsalez Esq, G.P.O", bearing Edinburgh & Leith rouletted ¼d black on yellow (S.G. CD14a), uncancelled as usual, envelope with hole at upper left corner, fine and very scarce. Similar envelopes with printed circulars enclosed probably delivered without addresses to many houses, subsequently delivered to the G.P.O and possibly used by them in their court cases against the Circular Delivery Companies. CD6, horizontal perfs misplaced, stamp repaired) cancelled "R.B & Co", endorsed at right "Closed against inspection & delivered at my house 24 Warriston Crescent this day at 10.30am W.C Smellie, 8 Dec / 66", the enclosed circular initialled "W.C.S". This circular was used as part of the Post Office evidence in the 1867-69 court cases that led to the suppression of the Circular Delivery Companies.
