Post Office Notice headed "NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC / Registration of Letters", announcing the introduction of inland registration on 6th January 1841, the 1/- registration fee to be paid in cash. Mail to abroad may be registered to the port of despatch only, except for letters to France which may be registered to destination if double the French rate is paid. A rare and important Post Office Notice, light folds, otherwise very fine, very few examples recorded, 213x343mm. Photo on Page 102. (Image1)

1842 (March) Post Office Notice No. 15 advising coins and jewellery should not be sent through the post, sums under £5 should be transmitted by Money Order, banknotes or drafts should be sent by registered post on payment of the 1/- fee, whilst it advises banknotes are still cut in half and sent in two separate postings. A scarce early notice, minor stains and small corner faults where the notice was affixed with wax to the reverse, 213x336mm.

1852-1921 Covers (5) and Certificates of Posting (7) including 1852 C.O.P with red boxed Edinburgh datestamp, 1864 C.O.P with printed 4d registration fee, 1878-80 C.O.Ps with printed 4d fee + 4d late fee or 2d fee + 4d late fee; an unusual West Riding Constabulary envelope with printed address and heading "Registered Letter" with label sending a sample of pepper for analysis, not posted; 1907 cover to USA with seventeen 1d stamps; and Parliamentary Proceedings covers bearing QV or KEVII 3d or KGV 5d. 1876-83 Covers comprising 1876 cover from Southampton to Denmark franked 2½d plate 9 + Large Garter 4d vermilion plate 15 (S.G. 152, £1,100 on cover); 1877 cover from Glasgow franked 1d + 4d sage-green plate 15 (S.G. 153, £600 on cover), and 1883 cover from Glasgow franked ½d + 3d on 3d. Three unusual frankings, the 4d vermilion very uncommon on cover. (3).

Certificates of Posting. 1844-1914 C.O.Ps for registered letters, differing types including three used by rural postmen, datestamps include the very scarce 1856 double arc "PICCADILLY" (London) c.d.s. in blue, boxed 1856 Edinburgh datestamp in red, etc. (19). Also 1863 registered cover from Llangollen franked 1d + 4d, and 1914-44 registration envelopes (3) with blank type registration labels bearing datestamps. (23).
