1870-99 Postal stationery cards, selected uses including 1870 (Oct 13) ½d violet card with a 1d due mark (due to paper applied on reverse); ½d cards cancelled in red (2); ½d cards addressed abroad uprated ½d (6 cards, various stamps), 1d (2 cards), 1½d (late fee cancel) or 2d; 1872 ½d card sent internally uprated 1d (late fee?); ½d cut-out applied to a home made card; ½d cards with printed or handdrawn pictures; ½d card registered to France uprated 3d, etc. (19).

image 1871-96 Privately produced cards franked 1870 ½d (7 cards) or 1887 ½d orange (4) including 1876 card with printed "Post Card" heading and royal arms contrary to Post Office regulations (which only allowed Post Office stationery cards prior to Sept. 1894); later cards including 1st September 1894 usage from Portsmouth (the first day private stamped cards were valid) and 1894 (Sep. 26) card from Llandudno with printed Post Card heading. Also an 1879 Swiss 10c postcard to Ireland, redirected with an 1870 ½d applied. An unusual lot, the pre 1894 cards allowed at the Book Post rate. (12). Photo on Page 100. (Image1)

image 1892 (Aug 23) ½d Brown postal stationery postcard posted from Manchester, the reverse with a lighthouse printed in red, headed ""OLD AMERICA" EXHIBITION / MANCHESTER / Top of Eddystone Lighthouse". The first example of this rare card we have seen, clearly based on the much commoner blue card issued for the 1891 Royal Naval Exhibition in London. Photo on Page 100. (Image1)

Three very scarce early picture postcards, which were only permitted from Sept. 1894. (3).
