1817 Political cartoon by George Cruikshank entitled "A French Elephant", depicting the rear of the Prince Regent, his fat legs and coat tail giving the appearance of an elephant, hand coloured, prepaid 1/2 from London to "Colonel Reynell, comding 71st Lt Infy, Chateau de Mazingham, near Aire, France", closed tear and a few peripheral faults not affecting the printed cartoon, an unusual item to the British army of occupation in France.

image Manoeuvres. 1873 (Aug 17) ½d Violet postcard to Guernsey, from a soldier engaged in the Autumn Military Manoeuvres being held on Dartmoor, cancelled by a superb strike of the very scarce "DARTMOOR / F.P.O / G17" duplex (code "B", no year date). The interesting message includes, "We have had only two days fighting owing to the bad weather ..... our only invalids are sore feet .... I warmed myself with a game of leap frog started by some of the Junior Officers & men. The 23rd Goat is within a dozen paces of where I am writing ...". Probably the finest of the few recorded examples of this duplex. Photo on Page 90. (Image1)
